TEACHING PROCEDURES
I. Presentation activities
  1. Revise and check something learned in Warming up.
  2. Ask Ss to brainstorm some natural disasters, great earthquakes in the world, and this will arouse their interest and do some preparation for reading.
3. Title expectation---- A Night The Earth Didn’t Sleep. Predict what will happen in the text. Then read and check Ss’ prediction
II. Practice tasks
Skimming-----Get Ss to read the for gist and find out topic sentence of each paragraph.
Scanning----- Deal with the figures/numbers in the text by filling in the blanks.
Words combination (pair games) ------Ask Ss to remember the key sentence structures and combine words on cards to form sentences as their original .Read them and deal with difficult language difficulties.
Question----Why did people in Tangshan think little of strange things before the earthquake?
Discourse analysis of the text-----How are paragraphs organized (also preparation for writing), and check Ss’ understanding about the title A Night The Earth Didn’t Sleep
III. Productive skills
Consolidation game-----dictogloss. ( pair grammar dictation using information gaps.)
Group project---Make a short movie. An Interview between a reporter and 2 survivors with aid of a director/ group leader/ photographer.
Group exploration & discussion------moral lesson ------What lesson do you learn from the text?(also preparation for writing ).
IV. Homework
1.  Group discussion-----Write an essay about what you learn from the text?
Life is like a moon, sometimes round, sometimes not. If we draw a timeline, we will find it is not always straight. We should know more about how to escape from an earthquake/other disasters to relieve the damage. Faced with unexpected diseases or even death, your choice is confidence with a smile. And give more love/care to people attacked by disasters.

2.  Group exploratory research -----Find out the rhetorical device(修辞手法) used in the text.
