●Use the Guess before reading to help students guess the main idea of one passage by the title, pictures and some given information.
●Know how to skim the passage to get the main idea and scan for detailed information 2.学情分析 (Analysis of students)
Students are fond of sports and have some basic knowledge about the Olympic Games, so they are willing to take part in the teaching activities.
Students have known something about the modern Olympic teams from TV or other media, so when it comes to the topic of the Olympics, students may have a lot to say. And students have the desire and ability to express their opinions and feelings. But lack of chances to express themselves makes they can’t communicate with others freely and that their pronounciation and thoughts need to be improved.
As for the reading ability, Students now have the ability to get the main idea of one passage, but can’t understand the whole passage throughly or integrate the information they get, so their reading ability need improving by activities and practice in class.

活动1【导入】Lead-in
Step 1 Lead-in (Class work , 2mins)
Before the class, show Ss a series of pictures about the Olympic Games, and play a Video in 2016 Olympic Games(The final competition between Chinese Women’s volleyball team VS serbia to arouse their interests about the Olympic Games. Begin the class by asking them some brainstorming questions. 1>T: Do you know where and when did it take place?
Ss: Yes! It took place in 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
2>T: What will you think of when you hear the word “the Olympics”?
Ss: The Five Rings Flag; mascots; medals, competitions , volunteers, and so on 3>T: Do people only hold the Olympic Games in modern times?
Ss: No, people held the Ancient Olympics in the past and held the Modern Olympics now.
活动2【导入】Warming-up
Step 2 Warming-up (Class work and team work, 8mins)
T: You really know a lot about the Olympic Games, now let’s have a competition on the basic knowledge about the 2016 Olympic Games, and you are divided into 2groups: the Ancient Olympic Team (boys), the Modern Olympic Team (girls), let’s see which team know more about the Olympic Games. Quiz:

T: Both boys and girls do a good job in the competition. Do you want to know more about the Olympic Games? Do you want to get more sores? Ok, let’s turn to page 9 and look at the reading part.
(This step aims at attracting the Sts to the Olympic Games, enable them to get familiar with some basic knowledge about Olympic and finally lead to the reading passage.) 活动3【讲授】Reading Step 3: Reading
Task 1. Prediction ( individual work, 2 mins)
Ask Ss to look at the title of the reading passage, and ask them the meaning of
“interview”, then tell them there are at least two people in an interview: interviewer and interviewee.
Show the pictures of Pausanias and Liyan, and give an instruction of them. Then let Ss look at the title and the pictures of this reading passage and guess what topic they are going to talk about. Ask somestudents to give their ideas.
(This step is to arouse Ss interests to this reading part, and increase their guessing ability through the given information.)
Task 2. Skimming for the general idea ( individual work, 3 mins)
Before skimming, show Ss how to skim: Read quickly and silently to find the main idea of a text and get an overall impression of the content.
Then ask Ss to skim the reading passage as quickly as they can and conclude what Pausanias andLiyan are mainly talking about.
After skimming, let students give their answers and conclude the main idea in one sentence:
The passage mainly talks about the similarities and the differences between the ancient and the modern Olympic Games.
(This task is designed to train the students to read the text fast so as to get the general idea and teach them the skill of finding out the main information in a short period of time.)
Task 3. Scanning for detailed information( Team work, 15mins)
Before the students read the text for the second time, explain to them what scanning exactly is: Read quickly to find specific information, and only focus on related information. Then get the students to scan the text. Ask boys and girls to answer the following questions, then to find out the differences and similarities of the ancient or the modern Olympic Games during
scanning. Meanwhile, go among them to see if they have any questions to deal with. If they have any questions about it, they can ask me for help.
Ask Ss to file in the table according what they find during scanning.

Step 3: Consolidation (team work, 7 mins)
Ask Ss to work in groups. Let students prepare questions to ask the rest of classmates about the ancient Olympic games and the modern Olympic games. Ask 4-5 pairs of students to do the this activity.
(The objective of this step is to check whether they have totally absorbed what they have learned. What’s more, students are encouraged to speak English and show their talent in acting. )

Step 4: Summary (class work, 5 mins)
At the end of the class, summarize what students have learned in this class and announce how many scores the two teams get. And then prepare three questions for groups to discuss: 1>Who is your favourite athelet in 2016 Olympic Games?why? 2>Discuss the meaning of hosting the Olympic Games. 3>What can we learn from the Olympic Games? what spirit? Then ask students to share their points of view. About the meaning:
Hosting the Olympic Games can spread its cultures and absorb technology and broaden our horizons. Not only can it push the economic and tourism development of the country ,but also make people know the importance of cooperation and so on. About the spirit:
Olympic Games—Friendship the first, competition the second. Goals determine what you are going to be. So whatever difficulties we meet ,we should be positive and be persistent, and remember that we should made up his mind to win and never say “impossible. About the favourtite athelte:
Then show students pictures of athelets: Chinese women’s volleyball and Fu yuanhui and share their inspiring stories to encourage them to keep self-confidence, self-improvement, and self-esteem in mind and try to be swifter, higher and stronger.
(The aim of this step is to help Ss get an overall understanding of what they learn in this class and inspire them to learn from the Olympic spirit. )

As the 2020 Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan. Please write down one sentence on wishing paper, wishing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics a success.
