Unit 4 Earthquakes------ A night the earth didn’t sleep
1.教学目标
Ability goals: 1) Get the students to develop some reading skills such as skimming, fast reading and careful
reading in order to master the main idea and gain some detail information.
2) Enable the students to know what happened before, during and after the earthquake. Knowledge goals: 1) Understand some words and phrases about the earthquake, like in ruins, crack, burst,
kill and injured.
2) Grasp the content of the text.
Emotion goals: 1) Encourage students to help each other and learn to protect themselves when an
earthquake happens.
2) Arouse students’ enthusiasm for English and develop their sense of cooperative learning through class activities.

3. 学情分析
Students are interested in this topic “earthquakes” and they are very active. Although they have a limited vocabulary which can help understand the text, they have the ability of getting information from the reading part, such as fast reading, careful reading.
4.教学过程
Step 1 lead-in
Today we will learn a new lesson. Look at the title. When you read it, what do you think of? Do you have some questions about it? May be the students answer: why, when and where. Step 2 Pre- reading
Show the students a short video and get the students to find the answers from it. Then ask them to predict the main idea and try to describe some scenes in the earthquake by using new words and phrases in this unit.
Lead into the text by asking the students: “do you want to know more information about Tangshan earthquake?” “Are you interested in it?”
设计意图:通过视频和图片导入本节课的主题:唐山大地震, 使学生产生阅读文章的兴趣和欲望;让学生用自己学过的词汇描述图片,锻炼学生的表达能力。
Step 3 Fast reading
Let the Ss read the passage quickly, then divide the whole text into three parts and get the main idea of each part.
