Knowledge aims:
1.Get the students to learn the following useful new words and expressions in this passage:earthquake,well,smelly,crack,pipe,burst,nation,canel,steam,ruin,destroy, shock,rescue,trap,shelter,right away,at an end,dig out,etc.
2. Get the students to know the basic knowledge about Earthquake.
Ability aims:
1. Develop the students’ reading ability and let them learn different reading skills;
2. Get the students to learn to grasp the main idea of a text .
Emotional aims:
1. Get the students to know damages earthquakes bring about and the ways to reduce the losses of earthquakes;
2. Get the students to know how to protect oneself and help others in earthquake.
3. Let the students be aware of terrible disasters,meanwhile get them to face it,treat it in a proper way and never get discouraged.

活动1【导入】Unit4 Earthquakes
Teaching procedures:
Step1. Lead-in
Show the students some pictures about natural disasters and ask them:
How many natural disasters do you know?
Look at the pictures. Can you name all the disasters?
Step2 . Warming up and Pre-reading
Let’s enjoy a short movie about the earthquake.
Guess the name of the movie?
What happened in the movie?
Do you want to know more about the big earthquake in Tangshan?
Step3. Fast Reading
Task 1 Skim to get the main idea of the passage.
Task 2 Divide the passage into three parts according to the main idea.
Part1(para.1): signs (Before the earthquake)
Part2(para.2-3): ruin (During the earthquake)
Part3(para.4): recovery(After the earthquake)
Step4. Careful reading
Task 1 What happened before the earthquake?
Get the students to describe some pictures about some strange things
that happened before the earthquake.
Show some pictures to the students.
These six pictures tell us some strange things happened before the earthquake .Then ask the students : "Did people in Tangshan think much of this events?" "No, they thought little of these events, a disaster would happen."
Task 2 What happened during the earthquake?
First of all , listen to the tape from part 2 , then answer some questions.
Then get them to find some details about the damage that was caused by the big earthquake.
The world seemed at an end, everything was destroyed. So what happened after the earthquake?
Task 3 what happened after the earthquake?
Get the students to understand the meaning of this sentence“All
hope was not lost.”
Then ask:“why did we say that all hope was not lost?” “Who came to help the people in Tangshan?”
Step5. Summary
Some true or false questions about this passage.
The earthquake in Tangshan happened late at night.
When the earthquake happened,no one outside Tangshan could feel it.
In the earthquake almost all the buildings fell down.
More than 400,000 people were killed in the earthquake.
No rescue workers or doctors were trapped under the ruins during the after shock.
With the help of the army and workers, the city began to breathe again.
Step 6. Post-reading
From this passage , we know that the earthquake can cause great damage to buildings ,some people may lose their lives ,so if there would be an earthquake in our school ,what should we do to keep ourselves safe? Get the students to have a discussion. Two pictures to help them discuss.
Step7.Consolidation
This period we talked something about the big earthquake in Tangshan 40 years ago. When the earthquake happened, almost everything was destroyed, do you want to enjoy the new look of Tangshan? Show some pictures on the screen,then ask them“why have great changes taken place in Tangshan since the big earthquake?”
Step 8. Homework
1. Read the passage carefully.
2. Finish off the exercises on page 27.
