I. Warming up:
Watch a short video about British math level and ask the question:”Are the British bad at maths?”
II. Reading:
Task 1: Read the news”Britain Turns to Chinese Textbooks to Improve Its Math Scores” on the sheet.
Task 2: What can we infer from this news?
A. Chinese admire the Western education system very much and decide to learn from them.
B. Britain has got remarkable achievement in their education after adopting Shanghai’s teaching methods.
C. Only Britain has realized and taken measures to change their bad performance in math.
D. Britain’s government has great determination to improve their next generation’s math standards.
III. Discovering Useful Words and Expressions
Task 1: Exploration and Discovery
1. Shocked by the performance of students on behalf of China who defeat their peers in other countries, Britain decides to turn to Chinese textbooks to improve its math scores.
2. They will try to adopt a teaching approach to math that is used in top-performing places like Shanghai.
3. Whereas the western teachers ask students to solve problems individually, the mastery method in China is more interactive.
4. Some experts question whether merely adopting Chinese textbooks will have a real impact on math standards.
5. The British education minister is confident that after they take the steps the young people will be properly prepared for further study and the result will be remarkable.
