Student Level: Senior 1 Teaching time: 45 minutes
Teaching material:HOW LIFE BEGAN ON THE EARTH (Unit 4, Student’s Book3,NSEFC) Teaching aims:
1. Learn about the formation of the earth and the development of life on the earth. 2. Develop students’ integrating skills, includinglistening, reading and speaking.
3.Arouse students’ awareness of protecting the earth and the necessity of changing the way of life.
Teaching focuses:
1. Get to know the new words and phrases in this reading material: theory, atom, globe, violent, carbon, vapor, atmosphere, fundamental, harmful, multiply, exist, lay eggs, give birth to, prevent…from…. 2. Get the students to understand the text fully.
3. Develop students’ integrating skills, including listening, reading and speaking.
Teaching difficulties:
1. Get the students to understand the text fully by listening and reading.
2. Enable the students to talk about the formation of the earth, the development of life on the earth and the way of protecting the earth.
Teaching methods:
1. Listen to learn the formation of the earth. 2. Read to learn the development of life on the earth.
3. Task-based methods to encourage students to learn from their daily life.
Teaching aids:
Multi-media facilities and a blackboard
Teaching procedures: Step 1. Lead-in
1. Review the topic of Unit 4 and what students have learnt about the topic to lead in.
2. Discuss different ideas about the formation of the earth and the development of life on the earth:
“Do you know the different ideas about the formation of the earth and the development of life on the earth? Do you believe it?”

(The purpose is to arouse the students’ interest in today’s topic and try to think about it.)
3. Share the teacher’s idea about the topic: “In modern times, people should believe in science.Where do people usually learn about science?”

(The purpose is toemphasize the proper way of learning about scientific research and encourage students to learn from life by themselves.)
Step 2.A trip to the museum, Part one:The formation of the earth
The teacher will act as a guide in the museum and help students learn about today’s topic. 1. Listen and get the key words about how the earth came into being.
According to a widely accepted theory, the universe began witha Big Bang . After that,atoms began to form and combine to create stars and other bodies. 2.Listen and write down the key words about the formation of the earth.
3. Check the answer and get familiar with the new words.
4. Invite students to explain the formation of the earth in their own words to check their understanding.
(The purpose is to enable the students toget familiar with the new words and learn about the formation of the earth by listening.)
Step 3.A trip to the museum, Part two:The development of life on theearth
1.Read paragraph 3 and find the importance of water for the development of life on the earth. 2. Read and write down the key words about the development of life on the earth

3. Check and explain what happened according to the information from Yunnan Provincial Museum. Introduce Cyanobacteria

(The purpose is to enable students to learn more about the development of life on the earth.) 4. Invite a volunteer to act as a guide and explain what happened according to a short video.
(The purpose is to encourage students to show themselves and help students understand the text better. ) 5. After reading and watching, have you learnt in what order the author introduced the topic? (The purpose is to encourage students to summarize how to finish expository writing .)
Step 4.Discussion
1. After reading and watching, you have learnt that these small animals become the most important animals on the earth. Are they taking care of the earth very well?
2. Group discussion: What can we do to take care of the earth better? 3. Share the idea of low carbon lifestyle.
(The purpose is to arouse students’ awareness of protecting the earth and the necessity of changing the way of life.)
Step 5.Assignment
Take a trip to the museum and learn more about the topic as well as the history of Yunnan Province.Then, write an article to introduce the history of our hometown.
(The purpose is to encourage students to learn by themselves and be proud of their hometown. At the same time, practice the way of introducing a topic according to the time.)
