Teaching Material: New Senior English For China Student’s Book 9 Unit 2 Using language--The greatest navigational journey:
a lesson in survival
Knowledge objectives:
1. To enable the students to know some basic knowledge about sailing; 2. To help students learn some idiomatic expressions to persuade somebody Ability objectives:
1. To improve the students’ different reading skills, such as scanning and skimming; 2. To help students learn how to persuade somebody in a logical way; 3. To enhance students’ teamwork; Emotional objectives:
1. To raise students’ awareness of the importance of teamwork;
2. To help students know there is no easy thing and be optimistic when faced with difficulties
Teaching focus and difficulties:
1. To help students conclude the difficulties that the crew faced and how they were solved;
2. To enable students to persuade somebody in a logical way; Teaching and learning methods: Task-based language teaching; Cooperative group learning; Teaching Aids: Blackboard, a projector and a computer for multimedia Teaching procedures: Step1: Lead in
Have a look at three pictures and answer the questions: Q: Do you know the guys in the picture?(give them some hints)
Q: If you were to sail outward, just like Marco Polo, what would they take?
(Design intention: To excite students’ interest in the topic and get more involved in the class

Step 2: Fast reading
Look through the passage and figure out the following questions:
Q:What did they have along the journey? Q:Was the sailing successful? Q:What was the place of departure? Q:What was the destination? Q:Who were involved in the voyage? Q:When did it happened?
(Design intention: To help students have a basic knowledge of the sailing course and know the crew would inevitably suffered hardship during the voyage)
Step 3: Careful reading
Reading each paragraph by different reading skills and answer questions. Para 1- 4: What are the difficulties mentioned in the first four paragraphs? What qualities do you think Captain Bligh showed in the passage?
Para 5: Which sentence can best describe their journey?
(Design intention: To help students know what specific difficulties the crew met during the voyage and what it was that led to their safe landing )
Step 4: Writing
Ask students the following question and require them to complete the writing according to the structure provided. Some idiomatic expressions are offered for reference.
Q: Do you think Captain Bligh should receive a medal? Why or why not?
(Design intention: To get students to emotionally understand that Captain Bligh is a marvelous leader and help them learn to convey their opinions about Captain Bligh to others in a logic way )
Step 5: Homework Think about what lesson in survival can we learn from the passage?
(Design intention: To enable students learn from the past experience and be more capable of overcoming difficulties in similar situations )
