The greatest navigational journey:a lesson in survival
Syllabus Objectives
The ultimate goal of the new syllabus is to develop senior students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, through which students will form good habits of learning languages as well as creative thinking,critical thinking and noble personalities. Teaching should be integrated with whatever methodologies that will contribute to students’ active participation in the class and their ability to analyze and to tackle problems. This lesson meets the requirements of the new syllabus. Analyses of the students:
1. This is a class consisting of 40 students with academic performances above average,
who aim to major in liberal arts in university when graduating from high school. 2. The students can have abilities of previewing, reviewing. They have previewed the
new words and expressions before class.
3. Most Ss would like to participate in activities guided by the teacher, and they have a sense of cooperation in learning activities like group work. Analyses of the passage:
The reading passage is written and set out to introduce the greatest navigational journey: the story of Captain Bligh’s amazing journey of over 40 days through about 4000 miles in an open boat across the Pacific Ocean with his followers after some of the crew took over the ship . Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge aim: [Com]
Help the Ss to learn about the amazing journey of Captain Bligh and his followers and their lesson in survival and share the latest news about a Sichuan Airlines plane , flight 8633 ,made an emergency landing in Chengdu after its front windshield broke. 2. Ability aim:
1). To practice the students’ oral English. 2). To develop the students’ reading skills. 3). To practice the students’ writing skills. 3. Emotion aim:
To let Ss realize that the whole life is an adventure, the furthest people are the person who are often willing to do it and willing to take the risk. To encourage Ss to overcome
difficulties bravely and be determined not to give up just like Captain Bligh and Captain Liu Chuanjian.
Teaching important & difficult points
Train students' reading ability and writing ability. Teaching procedures: Step1.Lead-in
To begin the lesson by asking Ss to predict the main idea of the passage from the title. Qs:1.Can you predict the main idea of the passage from the title?(Find out two key words)
2.What kind of journey does the passage talk about? Whose lesson in survival?

1. It was very difficult for us to get a correct reading from the quadrant as the boat moved constantly during the course.

Task4. Fill in the blanks.
On our 1 (depart) from Tahiti, some of the crew took over the ship. I joined Captain Bligh in the small boat with an uncertain future. The captain used a system 2 (call) “dead reckoning”.
