二、Pre-reading
Show some pictures to let students know famous people and their contribution in navigation.
Ask the students if the want to know some famous navigators and explorers and how do they found their way before modern accurate methods of navigation were invented? How do they work ? which ones do think still used today?
A bearing circle: the first instrument to measure the sun’s position and the sun’s shadow.
An astrolabe: a special tool for telling the position of the ship in relation to the sun and various stars.
A quadrant: measure how height stars were above the horizon.
A sextant: an updated navigational instrument to measure the angle between two fixed points outside the ship.
A nautical/chart: a map of the depth of the sea and the currents of the oceans.

Write down the working principles of the following instruments:
Bearing circle: to compare the height of the sun now with the of shadow the sun at midday.
Astrolabe: to tell the position of the ship in relation to some stars or the sun.
Quadrant: a more precise form of the astrolabe, to measure how high
stars are above the horizon, and compare that measurement with previous measurements.
Sextant: was the updated version of the astrolabe and quadrant, measuring the angle between two fixed pints outside the ship.
