Teaching objectives
1. Get students familiar with words and expressions related to navigation and exploration in the ocean;
2. Enable students to learn something about the ancient navigational methods and learn from the wisdom of the ancient people;
3. Foster students’ ability in skimming and looking up information in books and improve students’ reading ability.

2. Help students to grasp the main idea and look up detailed information of the passage.

Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead in
1. A 4-minute video clip of Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Do you know what this movie is about? 3. Why do people sail out to the ocean?
(to seek fortune, to sell goods, to set up colonies, to explore the unknown world...)
Step 2 Warming up
1. Guess the person based on the given hints (Zheng He & Christopher Columbus)
2. How did they find their way before modern accurate methods of navigation were invented?
Step 3 Fast reading
1. What does this passage talk about? 2. What is the structure of this passage?

Step 4 Careful reading 1. Blank-filling
(1) To find the ship’s position at sea a sailor used the North Star and the sun.
(2) A sailor knew that land was nearby if he saw fresh seaweed, nesting birds returning home in the evening or fog.
(3) Sailors used sea currents or tides and winds to increase their speed.
(4) There were two methods to find longitude: measuring time and speed; compass and
complicated mathematical tables. 2. Why are speed and time important in working out the longitude of a ship? 3. Why is the position of the sun and various stars useful for working out latitude?
Step 5 Discussion
If you were a captain aiming to sail round Africa, what problems would you come across during the journey? What skills would you seek in your sailors?
