A Teaching Plan for Growing up
Teacher: Angela Lee(李丹) Students’ level: Junior Grade Three
Teaching material: Unit 4(Section B 1a—1e), Go for it. Teaching duration: 40 minutes I. About teaching material
This period is the beginning of section B but in the middle of the unit. It
focuses on speaking and listening. I can help Ss use the target language in a different context and practice in listening for specific items in conversations. By means of tasks, students can grasp the target language to express themselves.
II. About the students’ level
These students have been in junior middle school for two years. Language itself wouldn’t be a big problem for them. In this unit, Ss will learn how to use the target language to describe the changes of appearance, personality and hobby…etc. Describing the changes and getting something from them would be difficult for Ss. And in the end of this period, they have to write a short passage about their changes. That will be the real tough one for them.
III. Teaching aims
1. Knowledge Objects
Key vocabulary: P.E. class, painting pictures, music class, ants and other insects,
interview, humorous, silent, helpful.
Sentence pattern: Did you/he/she use to…? ---Yes, I/he/she did.
/ No, I/he/she didn’t.
I/He/She used to…
2. Ability Objects
Train students’ communicative competence with the target language.

Get the students to learn to use target language to describe the changes of themselves properly.

VI. Teaching procedure
Step 1: Lead-in
At the beginning of the class, a happy song can let Ss go back to their childhood. And then I’ll show a baby’s photo to let Ss guess who it is. Then I’ll use myself for an example to give the key vocabulary and sentence patterns.
“I used to be fat. I used to have small eyes. I used to like smiling. I used to be out-going. I
used to like music class and painting class. However, I didn’t use to like P.E. class or ants and other insects.”
Step 2: Presentation
By means of asking and answering to make students familiar with the target language in
a different context. And in the presentation, I will use red color to make students pay attention to the target language.
---Did you use to have long hair/ like reading? ---Yes, I did./ No, I didn’t.
---Did Jim use to be tall/like helping his mom in the kitchen? ---Yes, he did./No, he didn’t.
---Did Tina use to wear glasses/have a little sister/like walking on the beach with her
families?
---Yes, she did./ No, she didn’t. Step 3: Speaking Practice
This is the first task for Ss to practice in asking questions with target language. It is
called “Do you have any questions for me?”.
Ss should choose the most popular star in our class. The rest of the class are interviewers.
They can ask questions about the past of the star including appearance, personality and hobby. Ss should use “Did you use to…?”
Then we will have a Class Star Release Conference. Step 4: Listening Practice
Firstly, I will creat a scene for Ss to understand the conversation better. I will show two
pictures of stars and ask them if they want to know these stars’ childhood. Then, play the tape and finish the questions below.
1c Listen and check (✔) the sentences you hear. 1. __ I didn’t use to like tests. 2. __ We used to walk to school. 3. __ I used to hate P.E. class.
4. __ I used to be on the soccer team. Answers: 1,3.
1d. Listen again. What do the girl and the boy say about things in the past and now? Fill
in the chart.

Answers: tests, tests, school uniforms, whatever we like, play, study, exercising, love. Task 2: Listen and fill in the blanks.

However, Huang Duoduo doesn’t think so. She ____ ___ to like tests. Now she ____ ____ _____ tests. Although tests weren’t too difficult, she wasn’t used to them yet. She thinks she still likes ____ _____ more than primary school.

to wear the school uniform, but now they can wear _______ ____ _____.

Step 5 Production
This is the last task for Ss. They should write down their changes of appearance,
personality and hobby. At last, they can share their footprints of growing up to the whole class.
Teacher’s Example: Appearance:

Past: I used to be outgoing. Now: I am still outgoing. Hobby:
Past: I didn’t use to like P.E. class or ants and insects. Now: I love exercising and learning more about insects My changes---
I am an adult now. However, I still like making friends and sharing with others. I am
much healthier and become braver than before.
Step 6: Summary
Teacher will give a simple summary and some wishes to Ss.
Growing up is filled with trouble sometimes, but it’s also full of surprise and happiness.

Step 7: Homework
Write a passage called How I’ve changed.
