Then he clothed the figure, decorated it with the jewellery, and even named it the Sleeping Love. The work was so beautiful that he couldn‘t help thinking that if the statue could be brought to life, he‘d very much like it to be his wife. love with each other and married. 2.Pygmalion was a very gifted artist. He spent a long time making a stone statue of a beautiful woman. It was so beautiful that he couldn‘t help loving it and wanted it to be his wife. 3.No, I don‘t think so. Maybe they can‘t understand each other, because they come from different world. It‘s very hard for Pygmalion to understand his wife, because his wife is made from a stone. She doesn‘t know the words, behavior, anything about him. Task2. Learn about Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 –2 November 1950) was an Irish play writer and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which aspect he wrote many highly appreciated journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings show social problems, but have a clear sense of humour which makes serious themes more interesting. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege. His most famous plays are: ―Widower Property‖, ―Mrs. Warren‗s Profession‖, and the ―Weapons and the People ‖, ― The Inner Truth‖ , etc. The comedy ― Flower Girl" (Pygmalion) by Alan Lerner for musical "My Fair Lady" , the musical was Hollywood blockbuster movie adaptation of a household name. In an era of George Bernard Shaw, standard pronunciation is highly popular. Speech is a sign of a person's social status, dialects looked down upon by society. Language and the importance of pronunciation have a lot to do with the change of social structure: in 1762, "voice just one talk of adornment "; In
1833, voice has become a symbol of social identity. Then using the standard pronunciation is easy to be regarded as aristocratic pronunciation. your future depends on your dreams. So go to sleep. – Bernard Shaw .未来取决于梦想。所以赶紧睡觉去。---- 萧伯纳 Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it. 自由意味着责任,正因为如此,多数人都惧怕自由。 ——萧伯纳 Since light travels faster than sound, people appear bright until you hear them speak. --Bernard Shaw 由于光速比音速快,所以在我们听到人们开口之前,个个都显得很聪明。 ——萧伯纳 Task3. Finally, Eliza comes back to Higgins. My Fair Lady is a 1964 musical film adaptation of the Lerner and Loewe stage musical, of the same name, based on the 1938 film adaptation of the original stage play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. Task4. Question to consider: What can show a person‘s social status?
Task5. Enjoy Ss‘ performance
Task6. Discuss the question and show opinion.
Possible answers:
RSE: Received standard English SE: Standard English
RSE is different from SE. SE can be different in different areas. The BE, AE, AusE, CE and so on, they are based on the same language called English. But they have been developed in their own way for centuries and have already become pretty different from others. Each of them is the SE for people in certain regions. However, the RSE only refers to one kind of English which is used by Englishmen. The highest standard of it comes form BBC. The way they pronounce and write English is definitely called the RSE. But the ironic thing is that though Englishmen regard their English as the standard as the AE in many fields. If you do speak a fluent RSE, you‘ll be admired by Indians or Japanese or Koreans greatly(HaHa). The true advantages, first is that few people can hardly understand what you are talking about, just like you are saying Mandarin in China. The second point is that if you are delivering a speech, speaking RSE means you respect your audience. And if you are writing an article, using RSE means you are in response to our readers. Third, using RSE shows that you have got a higher education. In the novel we can see there‘s a more fantastic thing : With fluent RSE, you can step into the upper class. Now let us to back to the novel and film. Without the caption, I bet you can hardly understand what Eliza‘s father is saying. That‘s where the trouble comes – the terrible accent. But on the other side, the way they speak offered us some stimulating facts. For example, open your book, turn to page 29.
A person‘s clothes may show his or her social status in society. Rich people or high ranked people may wear clean, neat, even gorgeous suit or dress while poor people or lower class people may wear dirty, shabby clothes.
People‘s attitude or behaviour to other people may reflect his or her social position. For higher class people, they may have very good manners , behave elegantly and may use polite words but on the opposite, lower class people may be rude and may sometimes even use dirty words.
A person‘s education, and so on. Step 7:
Teacher‘s conclusion
1. the quality of one‘s English may determine one‘s social status. Poor English will
condemn him or her to the gutter to the end of his or her day. In modern society, it is the same. If we grasp very good English, it may sharpen our edge and make us more competitive and competent in various competitions. So I hope you can study English harder and make a good mark in English examinations.
2. Eliza, in some aspect, she is brave to change herself. Because she is not satisfied
with herself, she tries her best to changer her present situation. She does all she can to make a better life. We should learn from her to change ourselves to make ourselves better. Get the Ss to think. Encourage Ss to show their opinion. Step8: homework In learning groups,
• set down the words and expressions including usages you think important. • find out the sentences using the past participle as adverbial.
Let‘s end our class with a song in this movie on the street where you live
