Teaching targets
Knowledge and ability objectives:
1. To get students to know about the famous agricultural scientist Yuan Longping and his
achievement in producing hybrid rice and also the influence of his achievement in the world.
2. To lead students to get to know the attitude of Yuan Longping towards his job and life,
that is, he is always persistent and never gives up in his job, and he is satisfied with his current life and doesn’t care about money and being famous.
3. To make students have a better grasp of using proper reading strategies and skills,
such as skimming and scanning, word-guessing, paraphrasing and summarizing.
Strategy objectives:
1. By using pictures, Ss can be led into the situation quickly and as a result they will have a strong desire to know more about the topic.
2. By means of task-based language teaching, students can participate in group work to get more information about Yuan Longping and his achievement.
3. By cooperating, interacting and discussing, students’ abilities of communicating and expressing can be trained. Moral objectives:
First, Ss can be touched by learning about Yuan Longping’s attitude towards his job and life, and as a result learn from Yuan Longping. Second, by looking at the pictures and the international fact about hunger, Ss can realize how serious the problem of hunger is, and begin to think over what to do in the future.

Leading in:
1. Show Ss some pictures about hunger and lead them to think over how serious the problem of hunger is and how urgent it is to solve the problem.
Students watch the picture, and interact with the teacher. By interacting with students, the teacher can lead in the person of this unit quickly. 2. Let students look at three
pictures of Yuan Longping, and ask them how much they know about him.
Students look at the pictures and think about the question. And then express their ideas.
By showing Ss the pictures of Yuan Longping, Ss can
realize that Dr Yuan has spent many years doing research on hybrid rice. And Ss can know
more about Yuan Longping by talking about the question.

Listening
1. Ask Ss to listen to the passage and summarize the main idea of the passage. Ss listen to the passage and fill in the blanks about the main idea of the passage. By listening to the passage, Ss can have a general idea of the passage and at the same
time practice their listening.
