Analysis of the teaching material
The content of the class is a shortened version of the play Pygmalion
written by George Shaw, which is based on a Greek myth. Like the gifted artist in the Greek myth create a statue from stone, Higgins creates a perfect young woman by teaching her English. The artist is the creator of the statue and Higgins of Eliza. Both the Greek myth and the play---Pygmalion reveal “The Pygmalion Effect”. The
psychological term is that people tend to behave as you expect they will. The play was later made into the film “ My Fair Lady” Analysis of the students
Students may know little about the Greek myth and the play. But they’re
likely to have great interest in the story, the play and the movie. Therefore, some researching and preparing work before class is necessary. In teaching procedures, teacher can interest students and guide them by acting out the plot and appreciating the theme song. Guide the students to enjoy the great work of George Bernard in different ways. Teaching aims:
Knowledge aim: Get students to know the main characters, their relationships and
the plot. Ability aim: Develop students’ ability to appreciate foreign literature works and the
ability to act out a pay.
Emotion aim: Encourage students to work in a team to perform a play. Introduce “The Pygmalion Effect” to students and ask them to have a
positive attitude towards life. Teaching importance:
Emphasize the correct use and pronunciation of English. Ts teach student to analyze the features of each character. Improve students’ ability of communicating in English by acting.
Teaching difficulty: Make the students understand some incorrect and complex
expressions in a play. Make students act out the play naturally. Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in
1. Activity 1: Enjoy a Greek Mythology from one of the classmates.
(Intention: Introduce the topic of the class and lead to the play--Pygmalion. Develop students’ ability to retell a story in English. )
2. Introduce the play , the author as well as the movie to the students.
3. Activity 2: Students review the main characters of the play by reading aloud. (Intention: Do some preparation for the appreciation of the scenes next. )
Step 2. Movie appreciation
1. Appreciate the two scenes of the movie: Fateful Meeting and Making the Bet. (Intention: Appreciate and observe the performance of the actors in the movie. Try to learn and imitate their way of acting.)
2. Activity 3: Work individually to find out the poor English spoken by Eliza and try to correct them. (Intention: Enable students to understand detailed information.)
Step 3. Acting out
1. Play the tape of scene 3: Changing Eliza
(Intention: Listening to the tape recorder of this part to get familiar with the plot and look for some detail information: 1) Henry Higgins’ way of teaching 2) Eliza’s reaction)
2. Activity 4 : Appreciate students’ role play of scene 3.
(Intention: Develop students’ ability of role-play and expressing in English.) 3. Activity 5: Discussion in groups about Henry’s attitude towards Eliza and her reaction. ( Intention: Help to understand the next scene.)
4. Activity 6: Read in roles about scene---The Ambassador’s Garden Party in each group. (Intention: Involve every student in reading the play and understand the character of each role.)
5. Activity 7: Appreciate students’ role-play of scene 4
(Intention: Develop students’ ability of role-play and expressing in English.) 6. Activity8: Vote for the best actor/actress and give the award. (Intention: Evaluate student’s performance and encourage them.)
Step 4 Music appreciation
Activity 9: Enjoy and sing the song of the movie---Wouldn’t it be lovely! (Intention: Try to appreciate the great work in different ways.)
Step five: learn to sing the song.
