(1)To improve students’ ability to use their won words to express the meaning of passages.
(2)To activate the students to appreciate the sense of humor in English across cultures. 3. Emotion aims:
To arouse the students’ interest in English humour, English culture as well as English itself.
Important points How to encourage the students to express themselves freely & bravely.

(1) How to help the students understand the sense of English humour.
(2) Enable the students to use what they have learned to express what they meet in the real context.

Activity 1
1. Listen to the tape and think over three questions during it: When and where did the story happen? What happened actually? How did Watson answer Holmes’ question?
2. Answer questions after listening. (individual work)
1. Enable the students to grasp the main idea & help them learn to extract the key information from the passage through listening.
2. Activate the students to use their own words to tell the answers individually.
3. Help the students to appreciate the punchline of the story.
Activity 2
Read the passage aloud & then tell the meaning of some language points: go camping; in a mountainous area; in the open air; look up; last; …a third time. Give the students another chance to know more details about the passage through reading it aloud by themselves
& paying attention to some language points.
