教学目标
At the end of the class, the student should be able to: 1)To learn the development of modern English. 2)To understand the reasons of English changes. 3)To draw a mind map about how English develops.
学情分析
本课教授的学生是高一年级普通班学生,该班学生刚刚入学,英语基础还是初中时的积累,英语基础一般,大部分同学有一定的英语听说读写能力;该班学生学习氛围浓郁,课堂表现较为活跃,适于开展以学生为主体的教学活动;在学习本课之前,学生已经根据老师要求对本课的生词进行了一定自主的学习。
重点难点
Teaching Important Points:
1. To let Ss understand the main change of English development. 2. To enable Ss to find the clues of English changes. Teaching Difficult Points:
1. To let Ss find out the clues of time, place and people.
2. To have Ss draw a mind map according what they learned in class.
教学活动
step 1 Lead-in
Ask Ss to watch a clip of video about a man imitating different accents of English:
T:Good morning,everyone! Today we are going to learn about Unit 2 ——English around the world. Firstly, I want to share an interesting video to all of you, while watching it, think about one question——what does this man doing?
Ss: (after watching the video)He is speaking different kinds of English. T: Does this man speak English all the time? Ss: Yes, he is speaking English all the time.
T: But do you think the English he speaks, such as the medieval English, Japanese English, and Chinese English are kind of different from each other? Ss: Yes.
T: Ok, why is that? Why are they different? And the answer is what we are going to learn today.
Please turn to P 9, look at the title of our text and try to guess: what we are going to learn today?
Step 2 Pre-reading
Ask Ss to make a guess——what we are going to learn according to the title: Ss:development,spelling,vocabulary,history……
T: Now let’s read the passage quickly to check your answer. And match the main idea with each paragraph. First let us read the main ideas together: Ss: ……
T: Now you have 3 minutes to skim the text and finish matching them. Ss:(read the passage quickly)
Step 3 Fast-reading
Ask Ss to read the text quickly and match main idea with each paragraph.
T:Let’s check the answer together and you can write down the main ideas before each paragraph. (pick out Ss to answer the question or let them answer together) Ss: Para 1
English is a language spoken in many countries. Para 2 Different native speakers can understand each other. Para 3 Why has English changed over time? Para 4
English was settled by 19th century. Para 5 English is widely used in Asia & Africa. T: Do you agree? Ss: Yes.
T: We’ve got a clear structure of the text. Now let’s get some specific information
Step 4 careful-reading
Ask student to read the text carefully and find some detailed information relating to each paragraph:
T: Now let’s read Para 1-Para 2, and fill in the blanks on your handout Ss read the text, fill the blanks and answer the question.
T: Now we get what happened from 16th century to AD 1150. Let read Para 3 to find out what happened next and fill the blanks on your handout. Ss read Para 3 and answer the question……
T. We can see that with time passing by, English developed a lot. Let’s read para 4 and 5 to find out more information about English development. Ss read Para 4 and 5 and answer the question……
T: Now we’ve got a detailed development of modern English. Now try to think about what factor or factors influence the development of English. Maybe you can find some clues in your notes on your handout.
Ss: English develops with time and places. And great people also influenced its development.
T: Excellent. So we can draw the map. As time went by, English develops a lot. And in different places, English would change under the influence of local culture. What’s more, great minds also played an important role. All the above factors contributes the road to modern English.
Step 6 Post-reading Mind map and introduction
Ask Ss to summarize what they learn today and draw a mind map relating to English development.
T: From the whole passage, we know that time, place and great minds influenced the English history. According to this, we can draw a mind map like this. Do you know what mind map is? It is a map that show how people think. It can help us develop our thoughts logically and vividly. It can be shown in various forms, such as a tree, fish, flower and so on. You can draw anything you like as long as it can include what we learned today. Now you will have 6 minutes. Work in group of 4, draw your own mind map and introduce the
English development history according to the map.
Student A: draw the mind map of the
text. Student B,C,D: work together to introduce the English history. You can refer to your handout as language support. Ss prepare and introduce.
Step 7 Post-reading Further Discussion
T: Besides the three factors we learned today, what other factors may affect the use of a language?
Ss: Economic development, cultural development, international influence……
