Function: To know John Janson’s heroic story of giving lifesaving first aid on his neighbor after a shocking knife attack. Knowledge objectives:
1. Enable the students to learn something about the Mekong River. 2. Help the students understand the key points of the reading material.
Ability objectives:
1. Enable the students to get the main idea of each paragraph. 2. Teach them to find specific information while reading. 3. Cultivate their good reading habits.
Focal point:
Get the students to understand the passage well by using different reading skills. Difficult point:
Teach the students to find specific information while reading.

1. The whiteboard. 2. A multi-media computer. Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Understand the headline
Help the students understand the word “heroic”. Step 2. Reading & Comprehension
1. Listen and scan the text, then put the following sentences into a right order. _____ The attacker ran away.
_____ Anne was attacked and started to scream. _____ John performed first aid on Anne. _____ John was studying in his house. _____ The ambulance arrived. _____ John ran outside with his father.
_____ John found Anne in her garden with terrible knife wounds. 2. Careful reading
(1). Paragraph 1&2: Who were recognized at the awarding ceremony? For what? (2). Paragraph 3: What did John hear when he was studying in his room? (3). Paragraph 4&5: What did John do when he saw the situation? (4). Paragraph 6&7: ①From where did John receive first aid knowledge?
②Who was the director? What did he say to Janson?
Step 3. Post-reading
1. Ask the students to find some adjectives to describe John’s quality. For example: heroic, brave, confident, etc. 2. Analyze difficult sentences. Step 4. Homework
Ask the students to Finish exercise 2 at page 39. Write something according to the pictures.
