Ⅵ.Teaching procedures Step1. Greetings and warming up Greet the whole class as usual. Lead-in by making a dialogue T: Who is on duty today? S: I am
T: How do you come to school every day ? S: I come to school by like.
T: You must be very careful ,because there’re so many cars , motorbicycles , bikes and also walkers on the road every day. If you are not careful enough, you may have an accident. Have you ever seen an accident?

S: Yes. Once when I was going home. I saw a boy was knocked down by a bike. T: Really ? Was the boy hurt?
S: Luckily he wasn’t hurt badly. Only his left leg was hurt a little, but there was nothing serious. He picked himself up and went away.
T: The boy was so lucky. But we must be careful in future. Now, look at the picture on the screen, please. (Show the picture on the screen.) T: Can you see the woman? S:Yes.
T: She’s not so lucky. I think she is hurt badly. Maybe her leg is broken. What can we do to help her?
S: I think we should call for a doctor or an ambulance.
T: Yes, I think you’re right. But before the doctor comes, what can we do to help her? Do you think we should pull her out of the car?
S: No, I don’t think that’s correct. Because we may make her even more hurt. I think we should find enough people to lift the car safely and take the woman to hospital at once.
T: I agree with you. In order for our safety .I want to stress one point , that is, we must look at both sides when crossing the street. Nowadays there are a lot of unexpected accidents. What would you do in such situations? In our daily life, first aid is very important. Do you want to know more about first aid? S: Yes.
T: Today we will learn Unit 5. Ok, now, please turn to page 33. Ask a question: What is first aid? Then have a first aid quiz.
Step2. Pre-reading
Show the Ss the picture of Pre-reading on P33 and ask them the following questions:
What has happened?
What sort of injury will the girl have? What kind of first aid would you perform? Step3. Fast reading Let the Ss read the passage quickly and find out the answers to the questions 1. Read the text quickly and complete the main idea of it.

Read the first part carefully and find out the functions of skin. • Protect you against diseases, poisons and the sun’s harmful rays. • Keep you warm or cool
• Prevent your body from losing too much water • Give you sense of touch Part2. Causes of burns You can get burnt by : • hot liquids • steam • fire • radiation • the sun
• electricity and chemicals
Part3. Types of burns: Let the students read the third part and answer these questions. How many types of burns are mentioned in it? What are they? Depending on what we divide them into three degree burns?
• First degree burns. Second degree burns. Third degree burns First degree burns

Affect both the top and the second layer of the skin. • Third degree burns
Affect all three layers of the skin and any tissue and organs under the skin. T: There are three types of burns. They are first, second and third degree burns. Depending on which layers are burned. (Show the picture on the screen.) Which picture is first degree burns? Second? Third? Part4. Characteristics of burns First degree burns:
• dry, red and mildly swollen • mildly painful • turn white when pressed Second degree burns • rough, red and swollen • blisters • watery surface • extremely painful Third degree burns
• black and white and charred • swollen
• little or no pain if nerves are damaged Part5. First aid treatment Have a discussion in groups
Let the students discuss: What we should do and what we should not do in first aid treatment.
Step 5 Post-reading
Show the picture once again and ask the students: Now, What kind of first aid would you perform? Ss answer together:

1 Cool the area of skin.
2 Wash it under the cold running water . 3 Cover the wound with bandage . 4 See a doctor if necessary
Step 6: Listen to the tape and finish the exercises . Tell if the following statements are true or false: 1. Our skin has three layers.
