Module 2, Unit 1 Tales of the Unexplained
Task: Completing a questionnaire & analyzing statistics

Brief Introduction:
This section consists of a series of activities in which students can improve their abilities of self-study by practicing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, especially how to analyze statistics, draw conclusions and make recommendations.
Teaching aims:
1. Students will learn how to complete a questionnaire.
2. Students will learn how to draw conclusions and make recommendations. 3. Students will learn how to write short passages about analyzing statistics and how to improve them.
Teaching difficult and important points:
1. How to direct students to write compositions step by step.
2. How to use group work well to improve the students’ ability of self-study.
Preparations before the class:
1. Students should learn the concept of the questionnaire in the last class. 2. Students should learn the rules they should obey when designing a questionnaire.
3. Students should form groups, and each group is required to design a questionnaire about their classmates. (Homework of the last class)
Teaching Procedures: Step Ⅰ: Lead-in
1. Ask the students to tell something about his or her friends in our class and their hobbies.
2. Mention that if they want to know the general information about all the students in our class, they need to complete a questionnaire and conduct a survey.
Step Ⅱ: Conducting a survey
1. Mention the rules of a questionnaire.
Ask the students to show their homework (the questionnaire)
2. Ask one student to present the questionnaire of his/her group, and conduct the survey. Choose another student to count the number to get some basic statistics.
3. Ask other groups to add some questions if any.
Step Ⅲ: Analyzing statistics and making good sentences.
1. Form a pie graph about students’ hobbies immediately according to the statistics got from the former step. (By using “Excel”)
2. Ask the students to use one sentence to draw conclusions. Give them some sentence patterns to start with. As can be seen from the graph, …… The graph shows that ……
It can be seen from the graph that …… Statistics show that……
Mention that this sentence can be the first part of a composition.
3. Ask the students to make some sentences to analyze statistics in detail. Students will learn the basic sentence pattern. (Some possible sentence patterns) ……% of the students like reading.
……% of the students like surfing the Internet. ……% of the students choose sports as their hobbies. ……% of the students like singing and dancing most. ……% of the students like doing other things.
4. Mention that they can do better. They can use different kinds of sentences to express what they want to say.
Compare two short passages to find out how to use different sentence patterns. Students are encouraged to feel the beauty of the variety of the sentences. (See “useful material one” below)
5. Ask the students to revise their sentences.(Group work) Step Ⅳ: Forming short passages
1. Mention that they can do better. They should use some links to connect these sentences to make up a short passage.
Listen to a short passage and try to catch the links in the passage.

2. Ask the students to use these words and phrases to connect sentences so as to form short passages. (Group work)
Mention that this can be the second part of a composition.
3. Ask the students to make recommendations. Give them some useful sentence patterns.
In my opinion, …… As far as I’m concerned, …… From my point of view, ……
Mention that this is the third part of a composition. Group discussion to add their own opinions.
4. Some students represent their groups to present their compositions.
Homework:
Write a short passage about analyzing statistics. 目前,家长开车接送孩子上下学已成为一个普遍现象,下面是就此现象所做的问卷调查中,支持者的观点。
