课题名称:The Spreading of Fake News
授课班级:高一•一班
授课时间:2018年5月28日(星期一)第2节
◆Analysis of the teaching material
Recently, the phenomenon of fake news is blowing up on the Internet. According to Collins Dictionary, fake news has become the word of 2017. And during the Congress speech made by French president Macron in America, he also mentioned that fake news might be a big threat to democracy, which aroused my interest in this topic. What’s more, I happened to see a conflict cause by fake news take place in my community, which made me realize that fake news is so close to our life. After referring to different materials, I finally decide to design a class where students will find out the reasons why people spread fake news, its harm and solutions to stopping fake news spreading through reading the materials and discussing with classmates. There are two passages available, the first of which shows us reasons why people spread news that they know is fake (sounds weird? but it’s true) and the second of which contains three pieces of fake news for students to read and conclude their harm.
◆Analysis of the students
As Senior 1 students, they are interested in hot topics at home and abroad. They hold the enthusiasm to find out a hot phenomenon (the spreading of fake news), analyze its reasons & harm, and finally propose some useful solutions. However, lack of cultural awareness (which is a long- term ability training) may keep them from offering practical answers. What’ more, having a relatively small vocabulary may become their obstacle to express opinions accurately, which needs the teacher’s help.
Considering the teaching material and the students, I think the following teaching aims should be included.
The aims of knowledge
Learn the scientific methods of finding out a phenomenon (the spreading of fake news), analyzing reasons & harm as well as proposing solutions. The aims of ability
1. Cultivate the students’ ability of critical thinking through individual work, pair work and
group discussions.
2. Inspire students to pay attention to the accuracy of language they use when discussing. The aims of emotion
In this class, I will share the story of kidnapped Nigerian girls to show students that spreading fake news can even threaten one’s life, which helps to arouse students’ sympathy as well as the importance of stopping fake news. Also, I’d like to raise their awareness of speaking truth. They will learn fake news may be easy, cheap and thrilling while truth may be hard, expensive and boring. However, truth never hurts innocent people.
◆ The teaching focus and the difficulties
The teaching focus and the difficulties of this period are how to:
1. enhance students’ ability of teamwork and critical thinking; 2. help students to use language accurately.
◆ Teaching procedures
Teaching Procedures
Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities
Explanation
Step 1 Leading in – Introduce the topic 1. Share a news story of a poor Syrian girl reported by CNN with Ss and ask their feelings about it. 2. Reveal truth to Ss – it’s a made-up story (fake news). 3. Let Ss share the fake news they’ve read in groups. 4. Show Ss a data table to arouse one
question: Why do people spread news that they know is fake?
1. Ss read the news and express their feelings.
2. Ss share the fake news they’ve
read in groups. Arouse students’ interest and lead in today’s topic. (6M)
Step 2
Reading and Discussions on the spreading of fake news: reasons, the harm
and
solutions
1. Ss read Passage 1 and use key words to conclude the reasons why people spread news that they know is fake: ①To fit in; ②To seek distraction or relief from unpleasant realities; ③To meet their curiosity. 2. Ss read three pieces of fake news and find out their harm through pair work. Possible answers: ①Disturb one’s daily life (Mr. Bean’s example). ②Arouse conflicts. ③Mislead people. ④Damage one’s reputation. ⑤Cause cyber-bullying (the violence on the Internet). ⑥ Cause financial loss. ⑦Cause panic in society. ⑧Threaten one’s life (the story of kidnapped Nigerian girls)...
3. Let Ss group discuss the solutions to
stopping fake news from spreading: ①What should government do? ②What should citizens do?
1. Ss read the passages and answer the questions (individual work). 2. Ss discuss the harm of spreading fake news (pair work) and solutions to stop it from spreading (group work). 3. Ss make presentations. Get the students
to find out specific reasons why people spread fake news; the harm of spreading
fake news as well as ways to stop it from
spreading. (32M)
◆Teaching flow chart
Step 3 Homework
Writing:
if you are invited by the 21st Century Teens to write an article about fake news, please create one based on what we’ve learned (the phenomenon of spreading fake news, reasons, the harm and solutions).
The students finish it based on what they have learned in class. The students review the whole class (2M)
Students’ Worksheet: The Spreading of Fake News
Activity one (Individual work):
Passage One
A team of US scientists has found fake news spread "farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly" than true news between 2006 and 2017. Who is to blame for spreading rumors online? According to a new study published today in the journal Science, it's us.
In this study, scientists have analyzed the motivation hidden behind people’s behavior of spreading fake news.
First, since humans are living in groups, people are influenced by others. Take the election for example. During it, people would get any number of emails from friends about Trump this and Hillary that...all produced by fake news machines. They might know it’s junk. But with more friends involved or the Facebook comments expanding, they found themselves wanting to jump in and be a part of the group.
Sometimes people are likely to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment. When people repost (转发) fake news stories, they’re escaping from daily troubles.
Meanwhile, fake news reporters usually choose thrilling headlines which easily arouse people’s curiosity. They may think to themselves that just taking a peek(看一眼) won’t hurt anyone. And since everyone around shares fake stories, their reposts won’t hurt anyone, either. Before they know it, they’re living in a post-truth societ where facts become less important and people are more willing to believe lies and fake things.
1. Use key words to conclude the reasons why people spread news that they know is fake.
Activity Two (Pair work):
Passage Two
Fake News:
According to Chosun Ilbo Daily, a famous newspaper in South Korea, a professor at Sungkyunkwan University has released his latest study on surname (family name) culture in ancient China recently. And he believes that there’s enough evidence showing Sun Yat-sen, the greatest revolutionist in Chinese history, is actually a Korean man.
Truth:
Chosun Ilbo Daily never published such news and it was produced by some Chinese news reporter.
Harm:______________________________________________________
Fake News:
A man took a picture showing a grandmother let her granddaughter pee (小便) in the pool and uploaded it to different Wechat groups, which aroused people’s anger at their bad manners.
Truth:
The photo was taken from a certain angle. In fact, that grandmother simply lowered her body so that the little girl could see goldfishes in the pool clearly.
Harm:______________________________________________________
Fake News:
Last year, a newspaper in Guangzhou reported their local banana trees were suffering from a disease called Panama Disease, which had killed thousands of the trees. Journalists even warned if people had eaten bananas from those diseased trees, they would have developed cancer possibly.
Truth:
There’s no evidence showing that Panama Disease will damage people’s health, according to experts.
Harm: ______________________________________________________
