Period 2 Learning about Language-Grammar(Passive voice
including the infinitive)
The General Idea of This Period
Students will rivise the passive voice and infinitive by using a story about a robot, Tony. Through some exercise in this period, students can consolidate what they learnt in the past, and summarize the usage of passive infinitve themselves. Three Dimensional Teaching Aims Knowledge and Skills
Revise the passive voice and infinitive in a passage adapted from the text: Satisfaction guaranteed
Students will know how to use the passive infinitive by some exercises. Students will learn to talk about some rules by using the passive voice and infinitive.
Process and Strategies
Students willfinish the tasks in groups and help each other.
The teacher may lead the students to sum up some grammatical items themselves and give some necessary explanation. Feelings and Value
After finishing the exercise of this part, the students will know how to use the passive infinitive in contexts. Besides, they will be more

(Preparations before class: divide the class into five groups) Step 1: Greetings Step 2: Leading in
Ask students two questions and talk about them in class:
Do you have a robot in your home? What can it do for you?
(At this part, the projector will show some pictures about different kinds
of robots to arouse students’ interests in the following part) Step 3: Revise the passive voice and the infinitive.
Activity 1: Ask students to read a passage about a robot and to fill in the blanks by using the passive voice and the infinitive.
(this exercise aims to help students revise the grammar by using the context about robots. Student will first do it by themselves and then discuss the answers in groups) The passage is as followed:
It’s in 2035 that robots are daily objects and are programmed _________(help) people live a better life.
Tony is a robot which ________ (test) out by a couple, Larry and Claire. _______(make) his owners satisfied, he will do everything that he _______(ask) to do.
But Claire doesn’t seem _______(like) him. Tony ________(not allow) to accompany her to the shops. However, one day, Claire falls off a ladder, and Tony manages _______(catch) her in time.
After that, she begins __________(trust) him.
Tony ________(design) to protect humam beings from harm. He really does a good job.
(In this part, the projector will show the passage and emphasize the passive voice and the infinitive using red colors)
Step 4: Introduce the passive infinitive and summerize the structure Activity 1: Ask a question: Do you think a robot is helpful to our life? Activity 2: Introduce a robot to students by using some sentences including two kinds of exercises:
First students will fill in the blanks in the sentences to revise the infinitive again.
Then students will transforme the sentences from the positive voice to passive voice.
(In this part, students will read the sentences shown in the projector and finish the first task one by one, but discuss the second task in groups. Each sentence will be accompanied by a related picture to draw students’ attention) The exercise is as followed:

5. Michael was very angry. He thought scientists need to solve the problems before Tom is sent back to his family.

Step 5: Learn by themselves
Ask students to finish the exercise in groups and let the students themselves analyze the usage of the passive infinitive in each sentence. The exercise is as followed:
1. The meeting ___________(hold) yesterday is of great importance to the development of our city.
The meeting ___________(hold) tomorrow is of great importance to the development of our city.
2. Mr Smith and his children went to the amusement happily, only _________(tell)that the tickets had been sold out.

3. The workers stood outside after finishing their task just waiting ________(pay).
The boss stood there waiting ___________(pay) the workers finishing their task.
4. I’m always expecting ____________(give) an opportunity to study in France as an exchange student.

5. It’s not a good idea ____________(punish) a child without principle. It seems embarrassing ____________(punish) by a teacher in public. (Each group will choose a represent to explain the usage of the passive infinitive and tell the difference between each sentence to the other students. This part aims to check if the students have understood the usage of the passive infinitive by working in groups and explaining it by themselves )
Step 6: Consolidation and Exercise
Choose the verbs in the passive voice to complete the passage.
(Students will finish this exercise by themselves and then check the answers . This part will help students consolidate the grammar learnt in this class )
