Lost Civilizations
Teaching Aims:
I. 语言知识目标(Knowledge objectives):
vocabulary:to learn and use the following words and expression
civilization, take over, erupt, flee, disaster, destroy, gradually, ruin, remains, cultural
II. 语言技能目标(Ability objectives):
Listening:To practise listening skills by communicating. Speaking:To practise speaking skills by exchanging opinions. Reading:To learn how to read diary entries.
Writing:To learn to write a diary entry recording he/she travels. III. 情感态度目标(Moral objectives):
To experience the fun by sharing what one has read. To strengthen the team work by cooperating.
IV. 学习策略目标(Strategy objectives):
To develop one’s critical thinking. To tell opinions from facts in the passage. V. 文化意识目标(Cultural awareness):
To know the similarities and differences between eastern and western lost civilizations.
Teaching Focus:
1. To use critical thinking to read someone’s diary entries. To be wise readers.
2. To promote the awareness of ancient and modern civilizations. Teaching Aids:
Multimedia facilities. Teaching Method: Task-based Teaching.
Teaching Procedures: Step 1: Lead-in
To present the subject to be read today and explain the new word civilization.
civilization: a society that is well organized and developed Step2: Prediction
To have students raise any questions which they think are related to the title. E.g. What civilization was lost? Where and when?
Step 3: Pre-reading
1. To present important information related to Pompeii and Loulan to students. 2. To help Students make sure they know the differences between opinions and facts. Step 4 : While-reading
1. Task 1—Reading for facts.
Have students work in two big groups. They can do it as follows: A task for Group1&3:
Firstly, read the diary of Day 2&3 silently.
Secondly, focus on facts about Pompeii and underline the information related. Thirdly, share what’s read in groups. Finally, report to the class. A task for Group2&4:
Firstly, read the diary of Day 10&11.
Secondly, focus on facts about Loulan and underline the information related. Thirdly, share what’s read in groups. Finally, report to the class. 2. Task2-- Reading for opinions.
Have students work in two big groups. They can do it as follows: A task for Group1&3:
Firstly, read the diary of Day 10&11.
Secondly, focus on the writer’s opinions on Loulan. Thirdly, share what’s understood A task for Group2&4:
Firstly, read the diary of Day 2&3.
Secondly, focus on the writer’s opinions on Pompeii. Thirdly, share what’s understood.
Step 5: Post-reading
1. To help students understand what are critical questions. things to think about when someone has something to say show six question words and explain how to use them:
who, what, where,when, why, how
2. To show some questions asked by the teacher as examples. Why were they buried alive? Why not escape? What caused terrible sandstorms?
Why is the writer so excited to be there?
3. To encourage students to raise their own questions or puzzlement related to what they’ve read today. Step 6: Summary
1. To lead students to think more about why these two lost civilizations are mentioned together. 2. To share one attitude towards modern civilizations:
If everyone can make contributions to modern civilizations, the world will be more beautiful and harmonious, which helps us to fly to the world with civilization. Step7: Homework Assign the homework:
