Play a guessing game. Whose shadow is this? Ask students to guess like this: It can’t be _______. It could/might be _____. It must be _______.
Then show them a picture and form to help them sum up the usage of making inferences using “must”, “might”, “could” and “can’t”.
Show a picture of Ling Zhiying and Kimi, ask students to guess the owner of these things.

They heard strange noise at night, but didn’t know what it was. Different people made different inferences. Next, please read the passage and make your inference. Pre-reading:
Have students look at the picture and answer the questions. What is the woman in the picture doing? How did she feel? Why? Have some students try to answer the questions. While-reading:
First, ask students to read the three titles in the box and decide which might be the best title after listening.
Second, listen to the tape and fill in the blanks. Third, have students work in groups, finish 3b and 3c.
3b: read the meanings in the box of 3b and guess what the words are, then skim the passage again and find the words from the passage to match the meanings. Check the answers in class.
3c: read the passage carefully and find out the strange noises, and then complete the chart in 3c. Ask different students to report those person’s opinions. Check answers with students.
Ask students to find out key phrases and key language points and explain the phrases “next-door neighbor, run away, go away, create fear” and the key structures “There must be something doing sth” and “have fun doing sth”. After-reading:

Read through the article again. What do you think the noise could be? List all your ideas. See who in your group can come up with the most imaginative explanation. Then look at the newspaper headline and finish the article about the strange happening.
