Teaching Objectives:
By the end of the class, students will be able to:

  • get the main idea of each paragraph;
  • work out the details of the text;
  • use reading strategies – skimming & scanning;
  • use some words and phrases to talk about saving animals , like, ban, get tough with, protect…from, nature reserve…
  • be able to summarize this passage.
  • get to know the illegal trade of animals, the importance of protecting animals and have further thinking about how to protect animal.
Teaching Focus:
  • Reading and understanding the passage, Saving the Antelopes.
  • Knowing the illegal trade of animals, the importance of protecting animals and further thinking about how to protect animal.
Possible Challenges:
  • Students may have difficulty understanding the passage.
  • Students may also be too shy or not motivated enough to share their ideas of the reading passage.

Teaching Procedures:
Step I Pre-reading---student’s report
Activities:
1. Ask a student to show her report about a movie Kekexili to other students and ask some questions about student’s report.
Purposes:
1, Introduce the topic and the main character of this passage.
2, Draw students’ attention.
3. Learn some new words and phrases, such as poacher, tough, buy over…
Step II While-reading
Activities:
1. Students work out main idea of each paragraph by skimming.
2. Students read the passage again and get some details by answering some questions. Students have some further thinking through question2 and question 3.
3, Students summarize the passage by filling the blanks of a short passage.
Purposes:
1. Students can get the general idea of the text by figuring out main idea of each paragraph.
2. Practice the reading skill –skimming.
3. Reading for details step by step can make the task a little easier.
4, Further thinking about the reason of illegal trade of wild animals.
Step III Post-reading
Activities:
1, Think and talk about a topic---what should you do if you were Jiesang Suonandajie?
Purposes:
1. It helps students to form the right attitude to protecting animals.
2. It helps students to think in others’ shoes and find more ways to solve problems.
3. It extends the knowledge.
Step IV Homework
Write down your opinions of the question---what would you do if you were Jiesang Suonandajie.
