1. Ask students to use the adjectives to describe a necklace.
2. Conclude the description with the target words, such as magnificent, marvelous, luxury,
diamond. Step2. Reading
Task1: Look through the text, find out the main characters mentioned and divide the story into 3 parts according to the key phrases: background information, before the party, during and after the party.
Task2: Read carefully about the first part(background information), and answer the question:How did Matilda and his husband feel about their life?
Suggested answer: Matilda felt dissatisfied/discontent about her life(Clue:She dreamed of
having fine gowns and jewels. She longed for a beautiful house with servants. She imagined herself talking to rich and famous people. She disliked the apartment she lived in. She hated its dirty walls and worn-out chairs and ugly curtains.) while her husband felt content with the present life. (Clue: At dinner he would lift the lid of a pot and say, “Ah, you’ve made some stew. There’s nothing I like more than a good stew.”)
Task3: Read carefully about part2 and 3, and finish the following blanks. Group work:
plots
Plots:receive the invitation--discuss what to wear--borrow the necklace--enjoy the party--realize the necklace was gone
Designing aim: Students are encouraged to cooperate with the group members and able to present a perfect answer.
Task4: Read attentively about part2 and 3 again, and try to analyze how Matilda’s mood changed during the course. Meanwhile, try to find out and appreciate the vivid expressions in the text. Task5: Predict what will happened next. Students are asked to answer the question: If you were the writer, how will you end the story? Step3: After Reading
1.Conclude the 3 basic elements of a novel: character, plot, environment description.
2. Summarize the skills of shaping vivid characters in this text: using vivid description, using contrast, using the skills of dynamic or static characterization
