Teaching Materials
You’re going to write a description comparing two places you know well. Follow these steps.
1. Think of two regions , cities, towns or villages you know well. One of them could be your hometown.
2. Write notes about some of these features:
Population Climate Industry Location Tourism Transport
3. Write sentences using your notes.
Harbin is a cold, industrial center in the north. It has over three million inhabitants.
Guangzhou is a hot, industrial port in the south. It has over four million inhabitants.
4. Rewrite the sentences and compare the two places. Use the link words in Grammar, and the ways of making comparisons in Function.
5. Organize you sentences into paragraphs. Each paragraph should discuss one particular feature. You may need to rewrite some of your sentences.
6. Write a sentences to start your description about the two places saying what you know about them or what’s special about them.
7. Write a sentence to finish your description and give your opinion about the two places.
Harbin and Guangzhou are very different cities, but I like them both very much.

Step2. Watch a video about Shanghai

Students will watch a short video about Shanghai. During listening, the students must make a note of some important information about Shanghai. After that, make a summary.
Step 4. Students show (PPT)
One student wants to share her favorite place with you. And she made a wonderful PPT to introduce. Please listen carefully, after you will play an interesting game about it.
Step 5. Students activity
One game to revise some information about Yinchuan.

Shanghai and Yinchuan are the two different cities in many ways. Now, let's have a quick and short look at them. To begin with, SH is located in the eastern China, while YC lies in the northwest of China. YC covers an area of 9491kilometers and has a population of 2 million, while SH has a total area of 6340 kilometers, more than 20 million inhabitants and is much more crowded than YC. SH is developing rapidly in many fields, among which petrochemical, electronics are the main industries. YC is also developing quickly, energy and chemical industry is the most important part.
SH has a pleasant climate, rainy in summer, cold and humid in winter. Compared with SH, YC's climate is very changeable. It has sandstorms in spring, cold and dry in winter. SH and YC both have very convenient transportation, such as subway and light rail in SH, railway and BRT in YC. So you can easily get around in the cities. The famous attractions of SH is the Oriental Pearl Tower, while in YC, you can go to the Sand Lake, Zhenbeibu Western Movie Town for visiting.
SH and YC are very different cities, but I like them both very much.
Step9. Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about comparing other two cities.
Step10. Teaching Reflection
此节作文课,教学的目的在于培养学生的写作意识,提高学生的写作能力。但在实际的课堂环节中,存在以下的一些缺失,现进行反思。
第一,课堂中,教师呈现的热情不够、板书的缺失都是急需提高与补充的。 第二,在第一个学生环节中,学生较为紧张,而教师没有给予一定的语言鼓励,
对学生的心理压力没有及时进行缓解与疏导。
第三,在课堂中,没有设计小组活动,对学生的小组合作意识的培养没有达到,
从而没有提高他们的合作能力。
第四,在学生写作的环节中,部分学生写作水平较低,应给予一定的课堂帮助。
但在实际过程中,由于时间的限制,忽略了这一点。
