2. Teaching aims:
⑴ enable students to know more details about this expedition. ⑵ enable students to consolidate reading strategies and understand some writing methods.
⑶ enable students to know some essential qualities and some measures when they face frustrations and difficulties.
⑷ enable students to strengthen the awareness of patriotism and to take pride in our country.

⑴ understand some writing methods
⑵conclude Shackleton’s qualities and put them into the discussion. ⑶raise the awareness of patriotism and pride for our country.

6. Teaching procedures:
⑴lead in
① ask Ss whether they remember Captain Bligh or not and recall what the story is about.
②tell Ss the navigation we are going to talk about is different from the navigation led by Captain Bligh .
(use the Captain Bligh and his story from unit 2 Sailing the oceans in book 9 to lead the topic out.)
⑵ give Ss some background knowledge
① read the bold part of the passage and find these four
elements: who, when, where and what.
(finding these four factors can help Ss conclude the main idea
quckily)
② show Ss a short video about this expedition.
(give Ss some background knowledge to understand the text easily)
⑶jigsaw reading
① conclude the main idea.( because the passage is long and difficult for Ss, I divide the passage into three parts and require each two groups complete one part,which can make Ss read the passage easily )
② tell Ss the flashback method about this text.
③ because Ss don’t read the whole passage, I send two students in each group to help other groups which have unfamiliar parts.(it can help Ss read the paragraphs they are unfamiliar with easily).
