Book 10 belongs to the optional textbooks and this class focuses on Unit 5 whose
subject is about enjoying novels. It is aimed that students are guided to know and appreciate this literature genre-novel. This unit introduces students some gifted and courageous authoresses such as Jane Austen (1775-1817), Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) as well as George Eliot ( 1819-1880), together with their universally acknowledged works as English authoresses rose in the 19th century. As for the using language, it especially concentrates on one of the great novelists who is Jane Austen as well as her most famous works Pride and Prejudice whose excerpt has been appreciated, The Proposal.
学生情况分析:
This class is intended for students in Grade Ten, class one who are relatively more outstanding in English learning. On one hand, they have never come across such reading material of the original novels, which leads to the difficulty in appreciating English novels; on the other hand, as far as these students, the excerpt from the novel Pride and Prejudice is a bit difficult to understand since there exists enormous obstacles of words and expression whose meanings are hard to figure out in the specific context. Besides, according to students’ emotional recognition, they are not easy to really understand the deeper and inner meaning of some sentences and conversations. Therefore, before class, it is necessary for the instructor to remove the problem of unknown words. In addition, they are provided with handouts to make a
full review for this class to obtain the main plot for the novel and the background information related to Pride and Prejudice.

Teaching Important Points
Enable students fully understand this excerpt from Pride and Prejudice, The Proposal including what happened to heroine and hero in Rosing Garden, especially lead students to spot the two reasons why Elizabeth refused Mr Darcy’s proposal
To help students to obtain some important detained information by the means of reading the key sentences which are usually the first and last sentences in each paragraph to compare and judge whether the given statements are true or false’
To guide students to analyze the changes in protagonists’ emotions during the proposal through analyzing key words and inferring from certain clues; which is the hardest part for students to deal with; students’ ability to analyze and conclude information need to be trained and strengthened;
To enable students learn a lesson from the class that never judge other based on the first impression which tend to prejudice against something you have no clear idea before digging into understanding. In the meanwhile assist them to build up a reasonable and right valued of marriage which should be based on love and trust

Step I Lead-in
Q: Have students heard the famous sentence “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”?
It is the first sentence of the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen, which is a bit ironic because in 19th century it is the greatest honor for girls to marry a rich and wealthy young man. In this way will the subject of the class be introduced. Therefore they are told that this is class focuses on this novel the excerpt of which is The Proposal. Step II author and characters
This class includes four part: author and the characters, listen for the plot, analysis of the Proposal as well as summarization of personality
Introduction to the novelist Jane Austen who is the first of the great authoresses in
the 19 century. Produced six completed novels including Emma, sense and sensibility, and the most famous one Pride and Prejudice, all of which deal with the problems and limitations of women’s choices. At that time, women’s respectable career is to marry , so the dilemma of her heroines is marry for love or something else. The appeal of Jane’s works is not only in their content but also in the ironic style and subtle words which is evident from the first sentence of the novel
Characters : Bennet family Mr and Mrs Bennet as well as their five daughter who have distinct characteristic such as Jane is attractive, intelligent but a bit reserved Elizabeth who is attractive, intelligent, brave, sensitive but a bit stubborn and always judge other based on the first impression;
Mr Darcy who is the son of a wealthy family and landowner of a large estate; he is handsome, intelligent and rich, but indifferent because of his high birth, he always show pride and enjoy superiority to others; Mr Binge who is the best wealthy friend of Mr Darcy’s
Mr Wickham who is handsome but he is dishonorable since he has lied to Elizabeth;
Step III listen for the plot
In the book Darcy when he says she is not pretty enough to dance with.
In the book Elizabeth represents pride.
Elizabeth begins to dislike Darcy when he refuses to dance with her.
Darcy is rude to Elizabeth shows prejudice.
Elizabeth dislikes Darcy even more because he thinks they are all people from low social rank
Darcy looks down upon Elizabeth and her sisters as she thinks that Mr Wickham has
been badly treated.
Darcy is sorry for what he says because he thinks that they are people
of lower social rank.
T: draw a brief conclusion about the listening part. Mr Darcy fell in love with and can’t resist the affection towards Elizabeth, though he struggled to. However, he with high social status always shows pride to others, enjoying superiority to others, which leads to Elizabeth dislike and prejudice against him. In order to arouse students’ interest and curiosity about what happened next to the heroine and hero. Actually, Elizabeth was invited to Rosing Garden which is Mr Darcy’s aunt’s house. Thus, She met Mr Darcy a second time and it was there that Mr Darcy proposed marriages to her. Then the reading and analysis of the Proposal follows.
Step IV Analysis of the Proposal
1) Read for prediction whether Elizabeth would accept or refuse Mr Darcy’s proposal, and if not ask students to spot the reason why Mr Darcy was declined
Reason 1: Mr Darcy ruined her sister’s happiness Reason 2: Mr Darcy caused Mr Wickham’s hardship
2) Read the key sentences which are the first and last sentences in each paragraph and according their reading to judge whether the following statements are true or false compared with the detained information in the passage
1. Darcy ignored Elizabeth's low social rank. (para1) F 2. Elizabeth disliked Darcy before the proposal.(para 2) T 3. Darcy was sure Elizabeth would accept his proposal.(para2) T
4. Darcy became uncalm even annoyed while he was talking with Elizabeth after being refused.(para3-5) T

He is handsome, intelligent, wealthy and indifferent. He always judges others too hurriedly and roughly. His high birth makes him show pride and superior attitude to others. He has an honest and kind nature insides. Conclusion
Never judge others based on the first impression because nobody is perfect
The happy and strong marriage should take time to build and based on mutual feelings and understanding and respect.

6.教学反思
1) Chance permitting, the time arrangement should be perfected since the former part of the class has taken too long to deal with so that last part of the class seems to be hasty. As a result, there is not enough time left to make the summarization of the proposal and highlight the lesson students should learn from this class including no prejudice against others based on wrong first impression as well as the ideal married built on love and trust rather than others such as appearance, wealth and social status etc.
2) more activities to train students’ ability to express ideas should be designed to encourage more active participation and involvement in the class.
