1. How to arouse Ss’ interests in mummies?
2. How to instruct Ss to predict during the learning process

Teaching process:
Step one: lead in and learn to predict
1. Learn to predict
Show Ss the first picture and have them to guess what it is? Ss: The pyramid
T: Do you know what are hidden under that pyramid? Ss: Jewelry; treasure; mummy
One explorer went into the pyramid but he said this to his teammates. It’s the curse. Be aware of the curse? Can you have a guess what the curse is? So to begin the class
2. Learn to predict
① Predict from the title
Key word: curse ———bad things———mummy ②predict according to the first paragraph
Teacher asks Ss to read the first paragraph together and then answer the following questions.
Ask students to pay attention to the last sentence. He discovered many things.
↓
predict
He was an explorer. → How?
Howard found the mummy. → How?
Maybe Howard is the victim of the curse. → What? Why? Ask students what they would write in the rest of the article if they were the author.
Step 2: Fast reading
Tell students the article is not in the correct order. So we are going to read
each part and find the main idea of each part. Step 3: Reorganization
With the summary written on the blackboard, how would Ss organize this article if they were the author?
It’s a simple way to help Ss grasp storyline and consolidate their understanding of the whole passage. Step 4: Integrated reading
Since students have already known the whole passage, read the whole article and try to answer the following questions. 1. What is the curse?
2. Why there is the curse? Encourage students to find all those strange deaths and things happen?
Students are encouraged to think independently, and then they can share with their partners.
Step 5 consolidation/ discussion
1. Do people know why these things happened nowadays? 2. How will you describe Howard’s discovery? 3. Why could Howard Carter find the tomb?
Through these questions leading to another mainline of the story. Though the riddle is still a riddle, his discovery is amazing. And he is an amazing people.
Instruct students to underline all these words describe the personality of
Howard Carter.
Encourage students to think about the personalities that make people amazing through story sharing. Step 6: Homework
Students are going to share a person’s story they find amazing in our next class. And they were encouraged to find the answers to the above question in the stories shared. Teacher will give necessary instruction if necessary.
