This is an introduction and speaking lesson. The lesson focuses on talking about the differences between British English and American English, aiming at letting students grasp the differences of pronunciation,vocabulary,and spelling. The topic of this unit is closely related to the cultural differences. For the sake of enhancing the interest and confidence of English learning.
Analysis of students:
The objects of this lesson are students in Senior 2 students. It is an unfamiliar field to the students. Maybe some of them did not know there are the different pronunciations between British and American English. Also, They just know little about the differences between vocabulary and spelling. Thus, they should master some background knowledge of the differences of British and American English. Chinese students lack the atmosphere of English language learning and some students have no interest of English learning. Therefore, teachers should design various interesting, fun and relaxing videos and activities to stimulate students’ interests and attention.
Teaching Aims
Aims of knowledge:
I.Master and know the different pronunciation of British and American English.
II. Learn and be able to use the different vocabulary of British and American English correctly.
III. know the different spelling in the two countries. Aims of emotion:
I. Taste the diversity of communicating in English.
II. Build confidence to open the mouth, which is generally considered as the difficult points of English learning.

Teaching Procedure
Step 1:Lead-in: 3min
Show a picture of “Oscar Wilde” and then show the quote he had said.” "We have really everything in common with American nowadays, except of course, language."
Ask students a question: “Have you preview the differences between them?” to lead in the outline of this lesson—Differences:pronunciation,vocabulary,spelling. Step 2:Learn the differences of pronunciation: 17min Give a brief introduction which includes three words“water,doctor,and tomato.” and show a bottle of water and a real tomato to attract the attentions of students to express the different accent of British and American English. Show the pronunciation of the three words:
Water 英 ['wɔːtə] 美 [ˈwɔtɚ] Doctor 英 ['dɒktə(r)] 美 [ˈdɑktɚ] Tomato英 [tə'mɑ:təu] 美 [tə'meitəu]
Show a video about the different accent and then ask a question: “Which one is the British English?”
Ask someone to repeat the same words which appeared in the video Explain the general differences between the two accents:
ArE: more relaxed,use lips less. BrE: tenser, use lips more.
Activity 1: Red Packet Game:
Ask some students to click the red packet, then imitate the sentence on it with the accent of BrE and ArE: I'm so hot,
I need a glass of water.
I'm a master of selfies. Where is my vase?
Step 3: Learn the differences of vocabulary. 10min
Show a video about the differences of the vocabulary:
The same word which has a different meaning in the two countries. The different word which expresses the same meaning in the two countries. Step 3: Learn the differences of the spelling 5min Ask the students to find the differences of British and American English.
Ask the students to read the two emails in the text book. Try to find which one is American English ?
