Listening and Talking
Step 1 Lead in:5分钟
T:class begins. Good morning, class. sit down please. Before today’s class, we are going to watch a micro video. Please pay attention to the question and the words in the video. Clear? So, enjoy it.
T: boys and girls, it’s almost the end of this term. The final exam is stepping close. Are you healthy enough to “fight in this war.”
S: no.
T: That’s so bad. where, do you think, is your health going? Are there some health problems of your body or your mind.
S: sleepy/no appetite/ headache/get cold/nervous„ (write on the right side of the blackboard)
T: yes, sometimes I feel sleepy too especially after longtime work. I agree.
T: if all these problems get worse, what should we do? Yes, we’ll go to a doctor.
Step 2 Listening:用时15分钟
1. Pre-listening:
T: Today we’ll listen to a conversation between a doctor
and a student like you, Li Yue. Li Yue is inher final year of high
school and she felt sick all the time, so she visited the doctor. In order to understand the conversation, I will tell you my strategy of listening called PK. P is prediction, which means you have to predict what will happen and possibly-used words before listening. K is keywords. That is to say you have to underline and listen carefully for the keywords while listening. With this strategy, you can PK all the listening tests.
For example, firstly, prediction: When seeing the doctor,
what do doctors usually do to find out your health problems?
S: Usually doctors„„or suggest a physical test. T: Yes, a doctor usually use a medical chart and asks some questions such as the patient’s name, age, occupation (occupation means job, so what’s Li Yue’s occupation?), symptoms (symptoms show you are having certain illness. For example, a high temperature is a symptom of having a bad cold.) and based on those information, the doctor may tell you the possible problem and proposed action (that’s the doctor’s suggestion).
Study the Medical Chart:
T: suppose you were the doctor assistant, look at the Medical Chart on your paper sheet.
2. While-listening: Listen text 1
T: Remember the K, underline and pay attention to the
keywords while listening. Now, listen and finish the chart for the doctor.(2mins for listening)
T: that’s the end of the conversation. Anyone would like to answer my first question: What’s Li Yue’s possible problem?
S: Stress.
T: Yes, Stress. What is stress? S: Stress is what we feel when we„
T: Yes, stress is when your life is out of balance, you feel upset and tired. If you are always stressed out, you’ll find it hard to get things done.
T: Now let’s listen again. This time let’s focus on the symptoms. And the suggestions should be paid attention to as well. Taking notes must be helpful for your listening.„
(Stop if necessary allowing students time to write the necessary information)
T: Check your answers with your group members. Ok, time is Medical Chart

up. Anyone would like to tell me Li Yue’s symptoms?
S: headaches, tired all the time, not sleeping or eating well.
T: For the proposed action, generally, the doctor suggests she do two things.
S: Do some tests.
T: after that?
S: Find ways to relax.
T: You did a really good job. Give yourself a big applaud.
Listen text 2
T: Actually, this is not the end of the story. A month later, Li Yue was invited to give a speech in front of the class. Before listening to the text 2, could you answer my predictive question: what would she mainly talk about before the class?
S: „suggestions
T: that’s a good prediction. Look at the questions on your sheets. Underline the keywords. (show on the PPT) now, let’s listen and choose the best answers.
(1) what will you feel after even a small break according
to the speaker?
A. guilty B. surprised C. worried
(2) which’s not the speaker’s suggestion on balancing work with rest?
A. do some sports
B. keep in touch with friends C. meet parents
(3) what’s the speaker’s main purpose of this talk?
A. share exercise experience
B. give advice about making friends
C. give advice about balancing your life
Step3:Talking:(用时20分钟)
1.A Stress Level Test:(5分钟)
T: according to Li Yue’s story, stress is a common and serious problem among high school students. Since stress will have such bad effects on our health. You’d better know your stress level.
Now let’s take a test on stress level. Is there any volunteer who wants to test your stress level?
S: „ (Two or three volunteers)
T: Here I’ve gotten ten symptoms which will tell whether
you’re having stress. Volunteers, if you have the symptom I am saying, take one step forward. If not, stay still. (The closest one to the teachers is suffering the most stress) And the rest
of you, let’s make marks and add them up so that at last you’ll know how many you get. Is that clear?
Stress Level Test
T: Hey, It seems that you’re not taking good care of yourself. Come here, I just want to give you a hug. Give your desckmate a hug if she/he gets more than five scores. T: When you find you are under stress, how do you deal with it? Do you choose to ignore it or fight against it?
T: Yes,we’d better do something before the stressful feelings get out of control. Then how can we get out of stress or lower the level of it?
2. Task-based talking activities: 15 分钟
T:Now let’s talk about it in groups of six. Before that, first you check out who in your group is having the most stress? Please write down his/her problem on the paper. T: Now let’s find the solutions to help the stressed person in your group. You must give at least 3 suggestions. Make sure your suggestions are practical. After talking I will invite two groups to share their conversation.
While talking, you will find these expressions useful to you.
Expressions for stress: headaches/no appetite/sleepy/„
The problem is that„
I am worried about„
„made me upset and frustrated.
I feel bad/guilty when I „
Expressions for giving suggestions: Balance„with„/keep in touch with/„ „is of great help Why not„/ You’d better„ If I were you, I’d „ It would be a good idea to„ It would be a good idea to„ T: (选两到三组到前边展示)
T: Are the suggestions helpful to you? If they are, I would like you to tear up your problem paper and shout “I can do it (change the slogan according to the different problems)”.
T: let’s make a summary. Here are my tips for today’s class. Let’s read together.
Predict before Litsening Pay Attention to the Keywords Use New Words Frequently Balance your Study with Rest
T:But is stress all bad?
S: No. In some cases, stress makes us work harder and
make more progress. So the best way is to take a positive attitude to it.
T: I adapted some words from Abraham Lincoln. They
are valuable words of suggestions. You control how you feel. You determine your thoughts. You must create your own happiness.
Bad stress is inevitable (cannot be avoided). Take action to fight them. Take action to shake them off.
