一. Analysis of students
Senior two students have mastered some reading strategies, they can read a passage to get the main idea of it, and they can find some specific information through skimming and scanning a passage. However, they are not good at expressing themselves in their own words. 二. Analysis of teaching materials
Lesson One What Is Beauty is the first lesson of Unit 18, and it is an argumentation. This passage tells beauty changes with time, culture and society, and different people may have different views about it. Besides, there are two kinds of beauty: physical beauty and inner beauty. Students read the passage and understand it is inner beauty that needs to be seen truly. 三. Teaching aims:
1. To help the students understand the passage by using reading strategies. 2. To do the summary guided by teacher. 3. To practice expressing one’s opinions. 4. To improve students’ understanding of beauty. 四. Teaching important and difficult points:
1. To help students read and grasp the structure of argumentation. 2. To help students to be able to have a deeper understanding of beauty. 五. Teaching methods:
1. Skimming and scanning method for information reading. 2. Task-based method to organize the class.
3. Individual, pair or group work to make every student involved in class. 六. Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead- in
1.Have a dictation of several sentences.(Running Dictation) (1). The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. (2). You cannot improve your past, but you can improve your future. (3). Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

(4). The man who has made up his mind to win will never say“impossible”. (5). Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.
2.Give students some pictures and let them come to the conclusion that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
( Purpose: to give students several sentences about “beautiful thinking”, lead the students to go into the topic“What Is Beauty” ) Step 2 Reading 1. First-reading
Read the text quickly and answer the three questions (1).Why do we say beauty is in the eye of the beholder? (2). How many kinds of beauty are there? What are they?
(3). How many factors influence people’s view of beauty? What are they? ( Purpose: Students read the text and find out some specific information.) 2. Second-reading
Read the text quickly and try to get the topic sentence of each paragraph.
( Purpose: Students read the text and get the topic sentences to help them understand the structure of the whole text.) 3.Third- reading
Read the text carefully and answer the question.
(1).Why does the writer think that the human race would die out if we all saw physical beauty in the same way.
( Purpose: This question may be a bit more difficult than others. It inspire students to think it over and conclude their own opinions.) Step 3 Analyze the structure of the passage.
Help students analyze the structure of argumentation by means of Mind Map.
( Purpose: Students draw their own mind maps to understand the structure of the text and know about how the author develop an argumentation.) Step 4 Oral practice.
1. Show students two pictures about artificial beauty and ask them to voice their opinions on this matter.

2. Discussion : find out some examples about the beauty.

( Purpose: Inspire students to express their own opinions about Beauty.) Step 5 Homework.
