Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading
Background information:
Students: 69 Senior high school students, Grade2 Lesson duration: 40minutes
Teaching objectives:
By the end of lesson, students should be able to:
1. Knowledge aim: to learn some new words and expressions. For example, qualification, substitute, essay, contradict, autonomous, enterprise, be occupied with, academic requirements, etc.
2. Ability aim: to improve their reading ability. To be exact, to find useful information efficiently and to conclude the main idea of each paragraph.
3. Emotion aim: be more interested in how to fit in well with foreign study life and be more cooperative in discussing with their classmates.
Important points:
Get the students to conclude the main idea of the passage and the main idea of each paragraph.
Difficult points:
Enable students to locate some useful information quickly and correctly. Enable students to have an overall view of the passage.

Teaching procedures:
Step1 Lead-in
The teacher helps the students to relate this unit to one similar unit they have learned ---- Travel Journal (Module1, Unit3).
1. Show students two video clips. One is shot in Thailand, and the other one is made in Hong Kong.
2. Share with students two famous sayings.
It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books. (读万卷书,行万里路。)
You can either travel or read, but either your body or soul must be on the way. (要么读书要么旅行,身体或灵魂,总有一个要在路上。) Step2 Pre-reading
Ask students to discuss the following questions in their groups: 1. Have you ever been abroad before?
2. If you have a chance to study in a foreign country, which one would you like to visit and why?
3. Brainstorming: what should we take into account before going abroad?
study plans, application, money, transportation, accommodation, ID card, passport and visa, weather, local customs…
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying in a foreign country?
Advantages:
It is easier to learn a foreign language.
We can learn a lot about foreign customs and broaden our horizons. We can have valuable experiences.
Disadvantages:
It is difficult to communicate with others. It is tiring.
It costs much money.
We must look after ourselves. Step3 While-reading 1. Skimming
Ask students to discuss the following questions in their groups: (1) What is the writing style of this reading? Narration.
(2) What is the main idea of the passage? Give one sentence to describe it. It mainly tells us Xie Lei’s study experience in the UK.
(3) Go through the reading and find the main idea of each paragraph.
2. Scanning
(1) Ask students to read the passage again by ourselves and answer the following questions.
How long has Xie Lei been in England?
Six months.
Which two types of people have helped Xie Lei most since she came to England? Her host families and her tutor.
Why has Xie Lei decided to join a few university clubs?
Because she wants to make some new friends.
(2) Ask students to choose the correct answers according to the reading passage. What does Xie Lei think of the preparation course? A. Boring B. Valueless C. Helpful D. Easy Why was Xie Lei’s tutor dissatisfied with her essay? A. Because she didn’t give her own opinion. B. Because the opinion in it contradicted his. C. Because it was only a draft and lacked detail. D. Because he found a similar article on the Internet. What can we infer from the text?
A. Idioms are taught regularly in host families. B. Xie Lei has adapted to her life in London now.

4. Post-reading
Ask students to correct the mistakes in the following passage adapted from the reading passage.
Xie Lei is a Chinese girl, that went to England to study for a business qualification. She tries to get use to a whole new way of life here. Unlike some of the students who live in student accommodation, she lives with host family. When writes the essay, Xie Lei has some difficulties in understanding her tutor, so she finally get the idea and her marks have been improved. She says it’s importance to have a
balance between study and a social life. We wish her all best in his new enterprise. Suggested answers: that—who; use—used; here—there; with host family—with a host family; write—writing; get—gets; been—been; importance—important; all best—all the best; his—her.
Step4 Homework
Write an English passage about 100 to 120 words.
Imagine you were Xie Lei and it was the first time for you to go to England. Add three other problems you might have met in England on an exchange program. Then share what you would do to deal with the problems. Teaching reflection:
