A. know more about the situation of black people in south Africa at that time. B.grasp the main idea and structure of the text;

1.Watch a video clip The long walk to freedom and think about whose freedom.
2.Look at some pictures about racial discrimination black people faced before Nelson Mandela came into power and think about why Mandela had to fight for black people’s right.
To activate the students’ background knowledge and make them interested in the new topic.

Skimming
Q1How many characters are there in Elias’ story? Who are they?
Q2.What’s the relationship between them? Q3.The passage is developed in the order of ______.

To get a general understanding of the text and its structure.
Step3 To be a focused reader
Scanning &Working in pairs:
Present the timeline of Elias’ life. To know 1952, the time when Elias met Mandela was a turning point of Elias’ life.

Detail reading
1.Read the passage carefully and compare Elias’ life before meeting Mandela with that after meeting Mandela.
2.Think over the questions the teacher gave and show their opinions on the different stages of Elias’ life.
3.Organize all the information they learned in the class and review changes of Elias life on a whole
To encourage student to catch the further meaning of the passage and get to know the changes of Elias’ life, situation of black people and the necessity of violence.

Watch a video clip about Mandela
and appreicate the great personality of Mandela
Discuss the good qualities of Mandela and his story.
Work in a group of 4 to write a short passage about his good qualities with at least one supporting detail.
After writing, each group will show their best
works, while the others give each one some comments according to the requirements.
1. Write good qualities of your hero with at least one
supporting detail. (5) 2. Use at least 2 attributive clauses. (2) 3. With clean and clear hand-writing. (1) 4.Make your work more beautiful. (1) In about 40 words.
To learn
more about Mandela and know the importance of ‘ love and forgiveness’ in our lives.
To improve writing skills by using attributive clause.
Step7 Homework
① Make your writing into a poster, then share with your classmates.
② Surf the internet or go to the library to get more information about Mandela.
Or you can watch the movie of Mandela -- Long Road to Freedom.
③ Know more stories of some other great people, including the ones on P33 of Students’ Book, then sum up and learn their good qualities.
