一、教材分析:
This lesson is aimed to teach students how to write appropriately in English letters, hence improving their writing skills and scores. In order to make sure the effectiveness of the input, a letter of request from an artist, Nick Cave is shown. There are some new words in the letter. However, it is very typical and worth exploring, since Nick Cave’s language in it is very formal, polite and native. 二、学情分析:
As students of Senior 3, they have a basic knowledge of writing. However, for the purpose of getting higher scores, they are prone to recite some writing samples and some structures, ignoring the receivers of letters, the level of formality and politeness in letters. In other words, their letters are not so appropriately written. 三、教学目标:
1. Help students to figure out the appropriateness in this letter by finding out why Nick Cave wrote this letter,
what his request was and how he made the request.
2. Help students to discover the means to achieve appropriateness in letters (PLEASE rule). 3. Help students to apply the PLEASE rule to polish an invitation letter and write a refusal letter. 四、教学重难点:

Activities Teaching Procedure Teaching Aims
Lead-in
Share a song of Nick Cave with students and introduce his letter of request by showing a video clip from Letters Live.
to arouse students’ learning interest and enable them to have a general and vivid idea of the letter (they are required to preview this letter before class)
Reading and exploring
Guide the students to understand the letter and explore the appropriateness of the letter by answering the following questions: (1) Who did he write to?
(2) Why did he write this letter? (3) What was his request? (4) How did he make the request? (5) How did he express thanks? Write down some useful tips and expressions on the blackboard.
To
help
students
understand the main idea of the letter. To introduce how to write
appropriately,
hence introducing the PLEASE rule. The PLEASE rule
stands for politeness,
level
of
formality, expressing personal feelings,
adverbs,
subjunctive mood and
a proper ending.
Polishing
Apply the PLEASE rule to polish an invitation letter for Li Hua (suppose Li Hua is to hold a dance party and desires to invite his foreign teacher Lucy).
To create a natural situation for students to write in.
To help the students to apply what they have learned
to
write
appropriately.
Discussing and writing
Discuss about how to write a refusal letter for Lucy (due to her planned business trip) and apply the PLEASE rule to finish it.
To help the students to apply what has been learned to

appropriately.
Sharing and assessment
Share and peer-assess their writing in terms of the PLEASE rule.
To develop students’ awareness of sharing and assessment ability as well as promote their ability to learn from each other.
To assist students to review the PLEASE rule.
Conclusion and homework
Conclude and arrange the homework for the students: to polish the refusal letter after class and hand it in.
To assist the student to consolidate the PLEASE rule.
