How Failure Became Success
Learning objectives:
1. To grasp the main idea of the story by skimming the key points of a story : who, what, when ....
2. To know the format of a story: beginning(background information) --- development ---- ending.
3. To try to retell the story in our own words after reading. 4. To develop critical thinking through understanding the story.
5. To sum up Shackleton, the main character and learn the qualities from him.

Learning process:
Step I . A song and an advertisement as lead-in.
【设计意图】sailing这首歌的视频,与本文的主题一致,通过创设与主题意义密切相关的语境,激发学生参与活动的兴趣,用课文南极之旅的招募广告,突出Shackleton 和27个水手的勇敢的传奇故事,并与课文开头衔接。

2. Development & ending of the story Read on and answer the following questions: 1) What happened to the ship when land came into sight? 2) What did the men do six days after that? 3) What happened on 16th April 1915? 4) What idea did Shackleton think of ?
5) How did the whale hunters react when they saw the six men? Why? 6) Why does the author say Shackleton kept his promise?

Step IV. Reading for speaking
Role play
Suppose you are one of the crew Mr. Smith. A reporter is interviewing you. He wants to know information about your journey, your impression of Shackleton and your feelings. Make a dialogue between one of the crew and a reporter. The following questions may help you.
What do you think of the trip? What impressed you most? How do you like Shackleton? What do you learn from the trip?
If you had a second chance to the South Pole, would you still go there?
