Analysis of Teaching Material
In daily life, all kinds of potential accidents can happen. It is beneficial to
us to know some common sense about first aid, and sometimes it can save lives. The topic of this unit is first aid. It aims to enable students to know how to deal with the emergencies before a doctor can be found.
Learner Profile
Students of Senior Two have already grasped some basic methods to express their own ideas. Even they cannot express it in a complete sentence, they can use simple words. And although they may not know well about first aid, they are not strange with it and they have some common sense about light injury. The topic may attract them and they will expect to learn more through the discussion in the class and the textbook. Therefore, I will guide them to learn more about first aid and combine the reality with the text.
Main Focus
1 Enable students to know the definition of first aid. 2 Enable students to know the importance of first aid.
3 Enable students to grasp some knowledge of how to perform first aid. 4 Enable students to grasp the new words used in the class.
Anticipated Learner Difficulty
1 Students may have some difficulty in listening and speaking in English. 2 Students might find it difficult to describe first aid in some emergent situations.
Overall Lesson Objectives
1 Students will be able to grasp new words in class. 2 Students will be able to get some first aid knowledge.

Students will learn the following vocabulary:
aid, first aid, temporary, fall ill, injury, bleed,

China and foreign countries in first aid for some situations.

Four pictures about accidents shown to ask students what they should do in such situations.
Part 2: Warming up

III Lesson Procedures
Part 1: Lead-in Timing minutes
Procedures
1 Greeting first.
T: “First, let’s see some pictures. What can you see?” Ss: “Some accidets.”
T:”Yes. Nowadays there are a lot of unexpected accidents. What should you do in such situations? Well, that’s what we are going to talk about today. Today, we are going to learn Unit5 First Aid.” 2 Ss read the learning goals together.
Aims
1 To arose students’ interest. 2 To get students involved in class.
3 To let Ss be clear about what they are going to achieve in this class.
Matters Needing Attention The pictures need to be carefully chosen. For one thing, it needs to attract students’ attention. For the other, it should be clear enough to let students see what is in the picture at once.
Part 2: Warming up
Step 1: Explain the meaning of first aid. Timing minutes
Procedures
1 Ss read the definition of first aid in the textbook first. 2 Ss complete the definition in the courseware.
3 T writes the new words on the blackboard and explains the meanings of them: first aid, temporary, fall ill, injury.
Aims
To enable students to know the definition of first aid. To make students to know the importance of first aid. Matters Needing Attention
Make sure every student has known the definition of first aid clearly.
Step2: Brainstorming Timing minutes
Procedures
1 Group work: Ask Ss to make a list of accidents around us which need first aid. After 2 minutes, call some groups to share.
2 T wrires down the words students give in the blackboard and then show what has been concluded in the courseware. Students read them together.
Aims To arose students’ attention of the accidents around us. Matters Needing Attention The accidents T concludes should be close to students’ life.
Step 3: Discussion Timing 5 minutes
Procedures
1 Group work: Discuss what kind of first aid they should give in the given situation---- a snake bite, bleeding, a nosebleed, a broken arm. a sprained ankle and choking. One group for one situation. For the last two situations, two groups of students need to act them out.
2 Four groups share their ways to deal with the accidents. T gives feedback. Show the correct method in the courseware.
3 Two groups come to the front to give their perfomances.
4 Some more situations. For drowning and car accidents, students read the solution together in the courseware.
Aims
To make them know more about first aid.
To enable students to combine the teaching material with real life. To enable students to know what to do under certain situations. To make students talk about first aid.
To make students cooperate with each other.
Matters Needing Attention Students are not able to express their idea in a whole sentence, so the teacher needs to encourage them try their best to speak in English, even using some key words, not a complete sentence.
Part 3: Pre-reading Timing minutes
Procedures
1 Look at the picture. What has happened to the little girl?
2 What kind of first aid would you perform in this situation? Make a list of your ideas. Here are three key words to help students make the list quickly and correctly. Call one student to answer the question.
3 Tell students to get ready to learn the details about burns in the reading part tomorrow.
Aims
To make preparations for the reading part. To grasp the first aid of dealing with burns.
Part 4: Post-activity

Procedures
T: “Here are several important numbers you should know.” Ask and answer.

Aims To insure that students know the three important numbers.
Step 2: A video Timing minutes
Procedures
To show students a video to see why first aid is so important. Conclusion: You can be the difference between life and death. Aims
To remind students of the importance of first aid again. . MattersNeeding Attention
The video should be shocking to arouse students’ interest in learning some
knowledge of first aid.
Part 5: Homework
1. Memorize the new words and next class we will have a dictation.
2. Read the passage “First aid for burns” carefully and pay attention to the useful words and expressions.
3. Finish the Comprehending part on P35.
Reflection
Teachers should give more consideration to the content that stimulates students' interest in designing teaching. The examples given should be close to the student's life and it must be easy to understand. After asking questions, students should be given enough time to think about them and organize their answer.
In the group discussion, students will inevitably communicate in Chinese or some students will deviate from the discussion theme. In this case, teachers must encourage students to communicate in English as much as possible, even if they cannot speak a complete sentence.
Homework should be developed according to the student's level. If the homework is always exceeding students’ ability, it will frustrate their self-confidence in learning English and lose interest in learning English.

In this class, the using of the curtain(幕布) and spot light(聚光灯)successfully attracted the students’ attention and created an easy and plasant atmosphere. The vedio shocked the students to learn some first aid knowledge after the class, which is one of the goals in this class.
