Teaching plan
I. Teaching objectives 1) Knowledge objectives:
A. Students are to comprehend the introduction, achievements, motivation and belief of Ashrita Furman who has broken a number of Guinness records in various unconventional events.
B. Students are to learn the following words and expressions: Guinness records, (un)conventional, hula hooping, pogo stick jumping; somersaulting, vomit, gymnastically, lunge, fascinate, meditation, spiritual, marathon C. Students are to write a speech using the mind map of the text 2) Language skills:
A. Students are to have a grasp on the following three tips through reading exercises: Tip 1: Focus on the topic sentences and key words when skimming for the main idea. Tip 2: Use key words as clues to match sentences with the proper contexts.
Tip 3: Summarize the key points by locating and paraphrasing the key information. B. Students are to learn how to write a summary by using the mind map of the text. 3) Affective objectives:
Students are to understand the difficulties one may go through to achieve full potential and always remain hopeful of the future ahead. 4) Learning strategies:
Students are to complete learning task through individual and pair work. 5) Culture awareness:
Students are to understand the Guinness world records.

3. Analyze Part 3-motivation in 2 steps to find out 3 reasons for how Ashrita came to be a sportsman 1. To practice Ss’ skill of searching for detailed information 2. To train Ss’ logic thinking by using key words as clues to find out correct sentences to fill in an incomplete context 3. To make Ss understand the importance of abstracting key points by locating and paraphrasing key information, especially when dealing with a long passage Further reading
