To help students to improve their reading skills and speaking ability, especially their describing ability                                                                 
To encourage students to appreciate the beauty and value of the cultural relics and inspire them to protect the cultural relics
2学情分析
 本课时的授课对象是南昌二中高一平行班的两个教学班的学生,南昌二中是江西省重点中学,是一所百年名校,招收的学生是南昌市的优秀学生,学生的基础比较好,而且平时的教学中非常注重对他们的词汇量和阅读量的积累,所以设计的课堂活动是基于学生的语言水平的。同时,课堂活动中包含许多学生日常生活中的元素,可以激发学生的兴趣,让学生更自如地运用出他们所学内容。
另外,基于学生的口语水平,除了细节查找类的问题,课堂问题的设计包含了许多开放性问题,不仅给学生更多的机会锻炼他们的口语,还能培养学生的批判性思维。

4.1.1教学活动
活动1【导入】Lead-in & Pre-reading
T: Good morning, boys and girls. Today’s topic is cultural relics. When we talk about cultural relics, what words come to your mind? How about you? What’s your opinion? What’s your idea?
Ss: Old, beautiful, the great wall…
T: It seems that you know much about cultural relics. Then, how about these pictures? What’s this?
Ss: Teng Wang Pavilion
T: This one? Still familiar?
Ss: Ba Yi Park.
T: This one is famous…
Ss: The Pyramid.
T: To be specific, it’s the biggest pyramid in the world---the Khufu Pyramid. How about this one? No more building…
Ss: Terra cotta warriors
T: The last picture?
Ss: A light.
T: Is it an ordinary light?
Ss: No. It’s beautiful.
T: Yes, it’s a special light decorated with crystal, so we say it’s a fancy light. Fancy means something unique and beautiful. Now look at these pictures. Do they all belong to the cultural relics? Have a discussion in group and give me reasons.
Ss: (discussion)
T: Have you made up your minds? Anyone wants to share their opinion?

T: Since you have different opinions. Let’s find out what is a real cultural relic by learning “In Search of the Amber Room”. first, let me introduce a bit about amber. Amber is the fossil form of the resin from trees. It takes millions of years to form. So is it easy to find the amber?

T: So it’s very rare. Some amber is even worth 10 times of gold.
Ss: It’s very expensive.
T: In other words, it’s very valuable. Here is a table of amber. How do you feel?

T: That’s true. But the two pictures only show a small part of the beauty of the Amber Room. Let read the passage and find how beautiful it is indeed.

T: Please read Para 1-3 and underline the description of the Amber Room.
Ss: (underline the description)
T: You find so many sentences. Now you can turn to your group members and organize the information according to the material, colour, style, size and decoration.
Time is up. Who can introduce the material? You please.
S: tons of amber was used to make it.
T: The colour?
S: had a beautiful yellow brown colour like honey.
T: style?
S: in a fancy style.
T: size?
S: 4 metres long.
T: decoration?
S: decorated with gold and jewels
T: anything else?
S: Six hundred candles lit the room. Mirrors and glasses shone like gold.

T: Well done. You’ve found all and from your answer such as tons of amber, gold and jewels, we do see the beauty. But what else do they tell you about the Amber Room.
Ss: Value (It’s valuable)
T: Then can you give some other key words about the value of the Amber Room in the three paragraphs?
Ss: (read Paragraph) the greatest gift, treasure and wonder…
T: excellent. Now I’m totally amazed at the beauty and value of the Amber Room. But there is something even more amazing. Can you find it in the very first sentence of the passage.
Ss: The amazing history.
活动4【导入】Task three: the amazing history

T: Exactly. When we talk about history, what order do we usually follow?
Ss: Time.
T: Very clever. Except time, what other elements do you think of about history?
Ss: People, event, place…(who, what, where…)
T: Yes. Here is a time table. You need to find other information like character, event and place. This task is a bit challenging because you need to read the whole passage. You can work with your partner. Here we go.
Ss: (Read the passage and finish the time table with partners)

T: Actually it is a cultural relic. You should pay more attention to the cultural relics around us. I’ve introduced the Amber Room to you. Now it’s you time. You can choose one cultural relic to introduce and you can use the information on the group work sheet. Here are some useful structures you can refer to. Now join your group and get to your work.
