Teaching material: English 9A Unit 4 Reading: The Shortest Player in the NBA Time: 3rd period (9:25-10:05), Apr.18th
Target student: Class 4, Junior 2 Type of Lesson: Reading Teacher: Chen Yan
Teaching Objectives:
By the end of the class, students are expected to
1) know how Spud Webb made his way to the NBA step by step,
2) analyze the qualities Spud Webb exemplified in persuing his dream, 3) use the words we learnt in class to describe their own qualities, 4) be motivated to dream big and never give up.
Teaching Aids:
Multimedia Computer, Blackboard
Teaching Procedures: I. Before-reading
Lead in the topic by enjoying a poem about dreams with students and talking about students' big dreams.
II. During-reading 1st reading:
By skimming through the passage, students are expected to find out:
Who the shortest NBA player is and the four main periods of time he went through to realize his big dream.
2nd reading:
By scanning through each part, students are expected to find out:
the challege Spud faced, the effort he paid and the achievement he got in each period of time.
III. After-reading 1. Discussion:
What are the qualities Spud Webb exemplified in persuing his dream? What can we learn from his story? 2. Follow-up:
Students work in groups of four and help one of the group members to make a dream card.
Homework:
Make a dream card of your own and write an article “I have a dream” with the information you filled in the card.
