Teaching aims:
Knowledge and skill
i. Be familiar with hip hop culture;
ii.Comprehend the passage, learn to define a word and list reasons
iii. Acquire the grammar about “time”. Attitude and value
i. Get a glimpse of the western culture;
ii. Learn to judge a culture objectively and contribute to the pride and patriotism of our own country.
Learning strategy
i. Learn to read for wanted information by means of picking out key words in the passage and group cooperation; ii. Learn to summarize a topic with a mind map.
Teaching focus Explore information of hip hop through extensive reading and many different resources.

Before-reading:
Step one: warming up
Watch a video and ask students to identify its style.
Step two:
Give a definition of hip hop and offer a quiz about the background culture of hip hop;
Step three: homework checking:
A brief introduction to four basic elements of hip hop.
i. brainstorm the styles of western music.
ii. take the quiz about hip hop and enlarge Ss’ vision of western culture;
iii.listen attentively to grasp the key ideas; iv. take notes of the key language points

2 While-reading:
Activity 1: reading for main ideas.
Step 1: skim the passage to identify the style of the passage. Step 2: homework checking:
One word to summarize each part.
Activity 2: reading for details.
Part 1: explain Ss’ framework. Part2: practice giving definitions. Part3:summarize how to list reasons. Part4&5: group work:
collect words and sentence patterns about the word “time”.
i. employ the reading skills to go through the passage;
i. involve actively to answer the questions;
ii. exchange ideas within the group to get the correct answers;
iii. polish Ss’ answers and choose one to present the answers to all. After-reading: Activity 1
Step 1: brainstorm a mind map about the whole text.
Step 2: show Ss’ understanding of hip hop through a speech or a performance
Activity 2
Step 1: assess Ss during the period of learning
Step 2: conclude the whole lesson
i.exchange ideas while drawing Ss’ mind maps;
ii. enjoy the culture of hip hop.
i. assess and reflect on themselves; ii.comb the structure of the passage.
Assignments:
1. Finish their words collection about hip hop and music; 2. Summarize “time” on their notebooks;
3. Practice the extra reading with the tips they learned today.
