MY FIRST WORK ASSIGNMENT
--“Unforgettable”, says new journalist

I. Analysis of the teaching material:
The topic of the unit is “news”, and it is related to making the news and being a journalist. This period is the second of the whole unit after “Warming-up”. It is a reading & writing class. The passage is presented as a conversation between a new journalist and his boss, which introduces how to be a journalist. The passage presented as a conversation is easier to understand, however, the terms in the news industry and the slang may hinder the students from reading.
II. Analysis of students:
Although a conversation seems to be easier to understand, it will be still difficult for the students to get a clear outline quickly. Therefore, the teacher needs to guide the students to sort out the thread by using the questions in the passage. Besides, as senior students in their second year, the students know something about the news and the related jobs from their real life. Thus, it is possible that the students can offer some other instructions on how to be a journalist.
III. Basis of the design:
1. According to “English Teaching Curriculum Standards for senior schools”, the senior Two students (Level 7/8) are supposed to : 1) to acquire and process the main information from the text. (能从一般性文章中获取和处理主要信息)
2)to understand the different views and attitudes in the text. (能理解阅读材料中不同观点和态度)
3)to write a short passage or report based on the information from the text or table.

2. According to “English Examination Syllabus for College Entrance Examination”, the students are supposed to be tested in:
1) understanding the structure of the text; (理解文章的基本结构) 2) understanding the main idea of the text; (理解文章的主旨大意) 3) understanding the details of the text; (理解文章的具体信息)
IV. Teaching Objectives: At the end of the class,
1. All students will be able to list the instructions to be a good journalist and give
reasons based on the text.
2. Most students can write down simple instructions/ suggestions on how to be a good
journalist except the ones from the text.
3. Most students can use the questions in the conversation to get the structure of the
text. Focus:
The students will find out how to be a good journalist through reading the passage.
Possible Difficulty:
Some students may find it difficult to give others instructions to become a good journalist except the ones given in the passage.(Possible solutions: 1. Ask the students to finish the task in groups, in which the other members may bring some ideas. 2. Use other resources to give students ideas.) V. Teaching Procedures:

2. Write a paragraph including 3 instructions on how to be a journalist, which contains at least one instruction from your discussion.
