By the end of the class, students will be able to

  • write a letter to give their friends advice on how to deal with their problems in life.
  • apply what’s been learned to expressing their opinions in English.

  • Apply what’s been learned to dealing with an authentic situation in the way of writing a letter of advice to friends.

  • Express one’s opinions properly in English.

  • Blackboard.
VITeaching procedures:
Step Teacher’s activity Students’ activity Purpose
Step one  Lead-in 1. Show a video of a student who is asking for help.
  1. Watch the video.
  2. Talk about the problem of the student and give advice.
Let students become interested in the topic and lead in the topic.
Step two Present 2. Show a writing of another student who is offering help to Tom.
3. Find out the three points of writing a good letter of advice.
3. Find out the three key points of writing a good letter of advice: structure, connectives and advanced sentences. Present a composition and analyze the writing together with teacher.
Step three
Discussion
4. Discuss how to lead a healthy life. 4. Give suggestions freely.
5. Boys and girls compete in giving useful suggestions by using what they’ve learned.
Practice their ability of giving suggestions orally and arouse their awareness of leading a healthy life.
Step four Group work 5. Display some letters from students. And ask students to work in groups to solve the problems in the letters. 6. Choose one letter from teacher. Read and discuss the problem in the letter in groups. Then provide advice on the problem. Develop students’ ability of solving problems, providing advice and working cooperatively.
Step five Writing task 6. Write a letter of advice to the student and help him/her solve the problem. 7. Write the letter in groups. Practice their writing ability in real life.
Step six Show time 7. Show students’ writing. 8. Show their writing in front of the class. Consolidate what they have learnt in class.
Step seven
Summary and homework
8. Make a summary of the class.
9. Polish the writing after class.
9. Summarize the class together.
10. Polish their writing after class.
Summarize what they have learnt in class. Let students put what they have learnt into practice.
