Teaching aims
1. The knowledge aims:
To enable the students to master some new words, phrases and the sentence structure of If Clause. 2. The ability aims:
To improve students’ abilities in listening and speaking through a lot of practice in listening and using If Clause to make sentences. 3. Motional aims:
To stimulate the students’ sense of being thankful to teachers by organizing a birthday party for a teacher.
Teaching key and difficult points 1. Key points:
(1) To master If Clause and the tenses in If clause and the Main Clause. (2) To master the new words: meeting, video, organize. (3) To improve students’ abilities in listening & speaking. 2. Difficult points:
(1) How to make sentences with If Clause.
(2) The right tenses in If Clause and the Main Clause.
Teaching Procedures Step 1 Greetings:
Greeting the whole class as usual. Step 2 Lead-in
Students follow to sing the song If You Are Happy and do as the lyrics ask to do. If you are happy and you know it, clap your hands. If you are happy and you know it, stomp your feet. If you are happy and you know it, shout “Hurray”.
Then ask some students “If you are happy, what will you do?”
Through this activity I can arouse the students’ interest of study and bring a new sentence structure.
Step 3 Making sentences
Show two pictures and two sentences about them on each page of PPT and ask students to make them into just one sentence with If Clause by filling the blanks. Then make these sentence together on one page, ask students to read them together and find the rules of the tenses in the sentence. We can simply say“主将从现”to help students better remember the rule.
Step 4 Pre-listening (Activity 1a)
Match the statements with the pictures a-d. Then students read the right sentence while the teacher read the letters a-d. Step 5 Listening (Activity 1a)
Listen and complete the responses in 1a for only one time. Then ask some students to read the responses to check the answers. Students should replace “do” with

the right phrase in the statements. This makes students better use If Clause. Step 6 Group work
Students work in groups of four to play a game: Relay in sentence making. The example on the screen shows:
S1: If I am free today, I’ll go to Mr. Liu’s party. S2: If I go to Mr. Liu’s party, I’ll bring some gifts.
S3: If I bring some gifts to Mr. Liu, he will be very happy. S4: IF Mr. Liu is very happy, we’ll have less homework.
After students are ready, invite some groups to present their discussion one by one.
This makes students master the new sentence structure. Step 7 Listening (Activity 2a-2b)
1. Teach students the new words in these parts: meeting, video, organize. And make phrase: have a meeting; watch a video; organize a party.
2. Listen only once and circle the correct answers to complete the sentences in 2a. 3. Listen twice. Choose the correct short answer in the box to answer each question. Students should using If Clause to answer the questions if they can.
After listening, check the answers by asking some students to read their answers. Step 8 Post- listening (Group work)
Students’ dear head teacher Mr. Liu’s birthday is coming. Please help me to organize a birthday party for him. Students work in groups of four students. Each of them helps with one aspect: Food & Drinks; Gifts; Activities; Invitation. The sample conversation:
Group leader: What will you do if you help with the food and drinks? S1: If I help with food and drinks, I’ll… S2: If I help with the gifts, I’ll… S3: If …, I’ll… S4: If…, I’ll… The sample report:
If … helps with…, he/she will… …
All in all, if our group helps to organize the party, we’ll…
After that, invite the group leaders if some groups to give a report about their preparation for the party. Step 9 Summary
Ask students what we have learned in this class. And ask students to read the sample sentences on the screen together.
Draw a conclusion:
If 从句(一般现在时),主句(一般将来时)。 “主将从现” Step 10 Homework
Write a short passage of the results of your discussion with in 60 words. You have to use the sentence structure in you writing:
If we help Miss Tan to organize the party, we’ll…
