~Teaching process: Step 1 lead-in 1. T: Good afternoon, boys and girls! Let’s start our English class. What time is it now? Ss: It’s 2:00 pm. T:What are we doing now? Ss: We’re having an English class. T: What about the students in New York? Are they having a class, too? Ss: No. T: Then what are they doing now? S: They are sleeping. T: Why are they sleeping? S: Because there is a time difference between New York and Hangzhou. T: Yes, there’s a time difference between New York and Hangzhou. How many hours of difference do you know? S: Twelve hours. T: Great! 2. (Show a map of the world.) Now, class, look at the map. We are now here in Hangzhou. It’s 2:00 pm now, and New York is here, it’s 2:00 am. So they are probably sleeping. OK, class, suppose it’s 9:00 am in Hangzhou, what time is it in New York now? S: it’s 9:00 pm in New York now. T: Yes, because there is a time difference between New York and Hangzhou. Next, let’s do something interesting. I’ll show you a picture. Look! Can you guess what’s in the picture? (Show a picture to the students with part of which is covered, and ask Ss to guess. Ss can make different guesses.) Show the picture bit by bit so that the students can get more information about the picture and get the answer closest to the right one, until they make the correct guess. T: Bingo! You got it! It’s a dragon. ( Write the new word “dragon” on the Blackboard.) T: What else can you see in the picture? S: I can see people’s arms. T: Yes, there’re some arms. So we can guess there are also some people in the picture. Then what are they doing? S: I think they are boating. T: Why do you think so? S: Because I can see a boat and some water. T: (show the whole picture) Good! You are really smart! Ask the whole class what they are doing. Ss: They are boating. T: But are they boating for fun? Ss: No. Lead students to say “They are boating for race.” Then write down the new word “race” on the blackboard, and teach them to read. So they are having the dragon boat races. T: When do people usually have the dragon boat races? S: On Dragon Boat Festival. T: (Write “Dragon Boat Festival” on the board) And Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival in China. When is Dragon Boat Festival? Is it always on the same day every year? Ss: No. 3. T: So when is the Dragon Boat Festival this year? Show a part of a calendar to the students and let them answer the date of the Dragon Boat Festival this year. Then lead students to notice the Chinese under the date. Tell the students it’s Chinese lunar year, and write it on the board. T: So we can see in Chinese lunar year, when is Dragon Boat Festival? Ss: It’s on May the 5th. T: Yeah, it’s always on May the 5th in Chinese lunar year. Step 2. Introduction of the traditional festival 1. T: What do people usually do on that day? (Write down all the activities Ss have given on the board. Make zongzi, eat zongzi, have boat races, watch boat races on TV, put aicao on the door. Children wear a small bag. It’s called sachet.) OK, this is something about Dragon Boat Festival. 2. Next, have Ss to practice the present continuous tense by asking and answer about all the pictures. Step 3. Reading 1. Today we’re going to read an article. Now please look at the two pictures. Can you predict what the article is mainly about according to the pictures? (Students make guesses and give reasons.) T: Is her prediction right? Let’s listen to the recording to check and at the same time, think about the question on the screen. 2. Play the recording. T: Yes, this story is about something on Dragon Boat Festival. But who is the story about? Ss: It’s about Zhu Hui. T: Is Zhu Hui watching the races and eating zongzi? Now please open your books and read the article quickly to see if your guess is right, and think about the question. 3. After students finish reading, have Ss answer together yes-no question. Then ask individual student to answer the reason according the passage. Lead them to find the useful information in the article. 4. Read the article carefully and try to find out what different people are doing, and then fill in the chart. 5. Check the answers one by one. 6. Have Ss retell the article. Read the passage a third time and get ready for the retelling. Two students retell activities in different families, another student try to retell the whole passage in her own words. 7. Well, we know Zhu Hui’s family are watching boat races and eating zongzi, but why are they doing these things? S: Because it’s Dragon Boat Festival. T: Yes, and his family are having Dragon Boat Festival in China, but Zhu Hui is now studying in New York. He can’t spend the time with his family. He’s far away from his family in New York . So can you imagine what feelings does he have? How does he feel? S: He misses his family. (Write the word “miss” on the board.) T: When we’re far away from our family, we usually miss our family. 8. Ask students to read the 2nd paragragh carefully and think over what Zhu Hui’s host family usually do. 9. T: What does the host mother usually do? S: She usually reads stories to her children. Have students to think why, try to find out the sentence that helps. 10. Paraphrase the difficult sentences. Warn students to notice the sentence “ It’s like any other night.” and try to paraphrase the sentense. Ask what the host father usually does to check if students have got the meaning of the sentense. Ask students to pay attention to the last sentence and read it together. T: How do you understand “no place like home”? (Ss paraphrase the sentense in their own words.) Yeah, you have your own understanding, in a word, it means “East, west, home is best.’) Step 4 After reading. After Zhu Hui talked with his cousin, he got a good idea. The next day, Zhu Hui does something interesting. What interesting thing does Zhu Hui do with his host family? Now the time goes to 9:00 am in New York. What are Zhu Hui and his host family doing? Please look at the other table on your paper. It’s now 9:00 am in New York. Have Ss to imagine their activities. They can discuss in groups of four and fill in the table. Then choose one to give a report while others act out the situation. Step 5 Performance Ss act out the situation they imagine. Choose two groups to act out and share the students performances. Then make it more challenging. The reporter and the performers are not from the same group. The performers have to listen carefully and act out other group’s situation. T: At last, Zhu Hui and his host family had a very interesting and happy Dragon Boat Festival in New York. And now ,his host family know what the Dragon Boat Festival in China is like, and they also know something about Chinese culture. So Zhu Hui successfully brings Chinese culture to the Americans, to the foreigners. And everybody, when you go abroad one day, I hope you can also bring our Chinese culture to the foreigners, to all over the world. Can you? Step 6 Homework Write down the report on the exercise book.
