Revision Module A
New Standard English: Book 7A
Analysis of teaching material:
1. The topic: Self-introduction in proper situations
2. The function: Make a self-introduction properly according to different situations
3. The teaching material: There are five modules in Revision Module A in total. The topics vary from personal information, family and relatives, school information, food and drink to school and school life. But they are all related to the common theme of self-introduction. It is the selection of the content of self-introduction that is difficult and demanding, rather than these individual topics. So several situations are designed to help students learn how to introduce themselves properly in different situations. A couple of activities are also adopted to enrich the expressing language and lay the foundation for students’ final output.
Analysis of students:
1. The topic “self-introduction” is close to students’ real lives. My students are able to talk about their basic
information, such as the name, age and hometown. In addition, they are willing to express themselves.
2. Most students are familiar with the majority of new words and expressions since they have learned most of
them when in primary school. They also have a basic understanding of self-introduction because they have experienced it before in their daily lives. These may help students introduce themselves properly. Teaching objectives:
By the end of the lesson, most students will be able to choose different items to introduce themselves properly in different situations with rich language. This will be achieved by
1. discussing and sharing with others to cultivate the ability of critical thinking in English, 2. summarizing the items involved in different self-introductions by listening and reading, 3. interviewing partners and introducing themselves to use language in real-life situations, 4. learning the words and expressions of describing the character, ability and love. Teaching focuses:
1. to tell the differences of different situations,
2. to understand different items involved in self-introductions in different situations, 3. to be able to use beautiful and various sentences to introduce themselves, 4. to introduce themselves properly in different situations.
Anticipated difficulties:
Students may feel it difficult to
1. summarize the items mentioned in a self-introduction,
2. choose proper items to make a self-introduction in different situations. Solutions
1. Talking about Tony Smith first to summarize the items involved in a self-introduction as many as possible and presenting the mind map,
2. Designing four situations to activate students to think critically on how to choose different items. Teaching methods: task-based method Learning methods: summarizing, discussion Teaching aids: multi-media, blackboard Teaching and learning arrangement Stages/ timing Activities Purpose

introduction and attract students’ attention. At the same time, students can have a basic understanding of the items involved in a self-introduction. The question “How should you introduce yourself in different situations” is raised to stimulate students’ thinking and present today’s topic.
Case1 (3mins)
Step 2. Guess
a. guess what Lingling may introduce
Students are supposed to guess what Lingling may introduce under the situation of going to a new school.
b. read Lingling’s self-introduction together to check their guesses and summarize the items mentioned
Students are supposed to read quickly and find out the key words to check their answers.
c. think about what else they usually introduce
Students are expected to think about the self-introduction they made when they went to the middle school.
This step aims to lead students to pay close attention to the situation ----“when going to a new school”. This may drive students to think about the self-introduction they made when they went to the middle school. As a result, they can understand these items (name, age, hometown, primary school) better and learn that we just introduce basic information when we go to a new place and first meet someone.
Case2 (8mins )
Step3. Listen and complete the self-introduction a. listen and find out who it is and what he wants to do Students are supposed find out the specific situation by listening to the tape. b. guess what may Li Daming introduce Students are supposed to pay attention to the key words “running for a monitor” and combine their life experience. This step aims to lead to the situation----“when running for a monitor” and develop students’ thinking ability. Students are supposed to find out all information after listening activities and summarize them
c. listen and complete sentences Students are supposed to complete sentences quickly and summarize the items involved in the self-introduction. Step 4. Enrich the language and use it a. think about more words and phrases to describe one’s characters and abilities and share with partners b. make a self-introduction to run for one of the monitors that they want to be
correctly.
Here is for students to enrich their language and be more flexible in expressing themselves. While making the self-introduction to run for one of the monitor that
they want to be, students are using and consolidating the words and expressions. Meanwhile, they will naturally have a better understanding of the necessary items involved in the self-introduction for running for something. This may make students understand that they need to show their advantages when they are running for something as to cultivate their emotional attitude. a. ask students to think about what Betty may introduce if
she wants to join the Health Club
b. show the entry form with basic items (name, age,
favourite food, favourite sport and lifestyle) and then complete it with Betty’s information
c. ask students to ask and answer according to the form Step 6. Rewrite sentences
Ask students to rewrite the sentence “I like playing basketball.”
Step 7. Answer the question
Students are supposed to answer the question “What else can we do to be healthy?” according to their life experience.
This step aims to develop students’ ability to express themselves in various ways, which becomes more and more important in English learning.
Students are asked to think about more ways to keep healthy, which requires their life experience, and reflects the practicability of language.

Step 8. Discuss and read the passage
a. work in groups of four and discuss what Daming may introduce if he wants to invite an American exchange student to live with his family
b. read the passage first and discuss which items are unnecessary

d. summarize the items mentioned in this paragraph
This is for students to think about proper items in the self-introduction in a more complicated situation. This step also aims to develop students’ ability of thinking critically. Additionally, it also helps to test their inductive ability.
Summary (2mins)
Step 9. Make a summary
Students are supposed to make a summary about different items that should be involved in self-introductions in different situations by themselves.
This is for students to come to realize different items they should introduce in different situations more clearly and have a review of this lesson.

Write down the self-introduction for the English Drama Festival. This is a lesson about Revision Module A. As basic language skills, listening, speaking and
reading have all been drilled in this lesson except writing. In order to consolidate what we have learned and reviewed better, the writing task is left as the homework.
