Understanding Ideas: The Monarch’s Journey
I: Text Analysis
The topic of the whole unit is about the relationship between human-being and animals. The text in the Understanding Ideas section is about the migration of butterflies, which helps students understand more about animals and encourage them to reflect upon the relationship between men and nature. It is important, which functions as input and prepares the students for the latter parts like developing ideas and presenting ideas.
The Monarch’s Journey is about the migration of monarch butterfly, which is far from students’ life and the explosive essay is difficult for them to understand. They may have difficulties in both understanding the ideas and presenting their own ideas with the words and expressions they just have learned. Learning English is more than words and vocabularies. It is important to develop their logic thinking ability through language learning.
II Teaching aims:
At the end of this period, the students are supposed to
■be able to master vocabularies & useful expressions related to the topic.
■talk about the monarch butterfly migration and animal protection.
■develop logic thinking ability with flow-charts and practice reading skills.
■to raise their awareness of animals’ protection and environment protection.
III Teaching procedure
Step 1: Leading in and warming up
Activity 1: Watch pictures of migrating animals
Show the students 4 pictures about 5 migrating animals: killer shark, swan, salmon and zebra and gnu and ask the students to identify them and what they are doing.
■ Rationale: Pictures can easily arouse their interest and are used to inform students of migratory animals and prepare vocabularies.
Activity 2: Watch a video
Ask the students to watch a video about monarch’s migration and find out
What the mystery about the butterfly is.
■Rationale: Videos can enrich some knowledge background to butterfly migration and leave a direct impression on the students and help them warm up for the reading text.
Step2 Fast reading
Read the text for the first time and find out the main ideas of each paragraph.
■Rationale: The ability to glance through the text and summarizing main ideas are practiced in this part, which enables the students to know what the passage is about and locate information more quickly.
Step3 Careful reading for detailed information
Ask the students to read the text carefully this time and then fill in the blanks with the content flow charts and cause-effect flow charts in the learning guide. When checking the answer, ask the students to guess the meanings of some key new words in the paragraph. Then the students are asked to conclude what the main idea of each paragraph and where the article is taken from.
■Rationale: Reading skills –skimming for detailed information is practiced in the activity. New vocabularies are usually the main cause of failures in understanding a passage and guessing meaning of vocabulary from context is important. Flow-charts are used to organize the information and identify logic relationships like cause-and-effect. Therefore, the task is to help develop logic thinking abilities, reading skills of skimming and summarizing main ideas.
Step 4 Extended reading
The students are asked to read another article about monarch butterflies’ migration and do a multiply choice -choose 5 from 7 sentences.
■Rationale: Articles from native English magazines and websites are usually taken as reading materials in the National College Entrance Examination. The original articles are important sources for students to develop language ability. An adapted article about monarch’s migration from the WWW.nature.com is employed to practice their logic thinking-especially identify cause-effect relationships.
Step 5 Groupwork: Volunteers wanted
Some environmentalists throw a party to call on the public to help protect Monarchs. Volunteers are wanted to perform on the party to call on people to protect monarch butterflies. Ask the students to work in groups to introduce monarch butterflies about migration, problems they face and call on people to protect monarch butterflies. They can use a poster with a slogan.
■Rationale: Learning can only happen in using language in authentic context. Therefore, the activity is designed to make learning happen by introducing butterflies to other with what we have learned in the period and push them to think out more ways to help the monarch butterfly.
Step 6 Summary and homework
Watch a video about Michel Jackson’s song The Earth Song and then call on the students to protect animals. The homework is writing something about the migration about seagulls at Zhanqiao in Qingdao.
■Rationale: Besides language learning, teachers should educate students to be a responsible citizen. A song is used to arouse their reflection upon human being’s behavior and call on them to protect animals. Summarize the article and the homework is used to transfer knowledge.
