教材分析
Learning about language部分包括两个方面,这节课聚焦的是Discovering useful words and expressions. 这一部分共有四项练习:练习一是根据相同的后缀写出已给单词的同根词;练习二是将下划线的表达用文中的表达进行替换,必要时可以重写句子;练习三是根据所给段落,选择正确的单词填空;练习四是看图,用所给的词描述图片,将描述说给同伴听。
四个练习看似没有联系,但实际上从词的构成到语句再到段落再到篇章,有难度的梯度,也符合本单元Inventors and Inventions的主题。
学情分析
本课的授课对象是高二学生。学生的英语基础存在个体的差异,但整体上经过一边的高中英语学习,已经具备一定的学习词汇、表达的能力。但选修八相对其他几本书来说难度增加,加之“如何成为一个真正的发明家”这一话题对学生们来说比较陌生,因此如何熟悉并运用本单元词汇、表达需要具体的指导与练习。
教学目标
At the end of the class, the students will be able to
1) make word pairs with the same suffix and use this rule to be familiar and memorize new words;
2) categorize the words and expressions to describe how to be an inventor with the help of the word web;
3) use the words and expressions to translate sentences, understand them in the context and write a short speech to introduce the author’s experience.

教学过程
Step 1: Word puzzle

T provides an example and analyze different types and suffix. This activity aims to introduce the 1st way of learning words, that is, learn them in a family, and thus arouse Ss’ awareness of how words are formed and encourage them to pay attention to prefix or suffix of words.
Step 3: Set up a word web

Students work in groups to underline the words and expressions according to the different aspects listed.

This activity aims at providing Ss another chance to read the text, and categorize the key words and expressions.
Ss will be aware of a new way to learn and use words and expressions —the Word Web.

Step 5: Translation

Ss talk to each other to check the translation.

Step 6: Report — Sharing experience
