B U7 Reading Ⅱ: An interview with an ORBIS doctor

Ⅰ. Teaching objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
1. infer and understand the meanings and usage of the language points from the context; 2. know how to use the language points in similar situations by completing sentences,
matching, making dialogues, discussing and etc.;
3. be able to skim the text for overall information and scan for details to have a better
understanding of the text;
4. think further about being volunteers and develop the awareness of helping others.
Ⅱ. Teaching key and important points:
1. use the new expressions in similar situations; 2. have a better and clearer understanding of the text; 3. develop the students’ the awareness of helping others.
Ⅲ. Teaching procedures:
(In this teaching plan, the underlined parts are keys.) Step 1 Lead-in
The teacher is going to give a riddle and ask: Q1: What is it? (eye)
Q2: What can we do with eyes? (read books, watch films, see beautiful scenery, see family members, talk …)
The teacher is going to conclude that eyes are important, but some people don’t have healthy eyes, which leads the topic to Step 2.
Purpose: The students’ interest is aroused by the riddle and the free talk on eyes.
Step 2 Further understanding and language points
1. Language point 1: blind & blindness (adj. + ness = n.)
The teacher is going to show a picture, from which “blind” and “blindness” will be listed. The teacher will ask how to form “blindness”, and encourage the students to think of more examples.
Another three pairs of examples will be given: dark/ darkness, deaf/ deafness, happy/ happiness. The students are expected to use some of them to complete a brief introduction about Helen Keller, the writer of Three Days to See.
2. Language point 2: treat & cure
The teacher will guide the students to paraphrase a sentence, in which “treat” and “cure” are used. The students are going to guess their difference from the examples, learn their phrases and finish an exercise.
The phrases: treat sb/ sth, treat sb for sth; cure sb, cure sb of sth. The exercise is based on the following picture.
(There was something wrong with the man’s eyes. So he visited the doctor.)
The doctor treated the man.
The doctor treated the man’s eyes.
The doctor treated the man for his eyes.
(Now, there is nothing wrong with the man’s eyes.)
The doctor cured the man.
the doctor cured the man of his eyes.
3. Further understanding & language point 3: operation & operate
The students will be asked to find two reasons why those people have the hope to see. (ORBIS, modern medicine) The two reasons are going to be analyzed respectively.
Q: What does ORBIS do to help people with eye problems?
By completing the sentence “ORBIS uses its Flying Eye Hospital to visit poor areas and its volunteer doctors do operations on patients. (line 8-9)”, the new word “operation” and the phrase “do operations on sb” can be extracted.
There are two exercises about “operation” and its verb “operate”. One is about a girl seeing again, and the other is about Dr Ma. 4. Language point 4: afford
The patients don’t have money for operations, so the teacher will ask the students to find two sentences in the text to support this. The sentences are: 1. Many people don’t have money for medical treatment. 2. Many of our patients can’t afford to go to hospital.
Two pictures will be used to help the students understand the usage of “afford”. Based on this, the students will be required making a dialogue about a poor woman with eye problems. Afterwards, they will finish a dialogue between the woman and an ORBIS doctor. Two of the seven choices will not be used. 5. Language point 5: proud
Three sentences about Dr Ma, in which “proud” is used, will be shown to the students. They need to summarize three phrases of “proud”.
Phrases: be proud to do sth/ be proud of sth/ be proud that-clause
Bearing these phrases in mind, the students will match the two halves of the sentences, which focus on an ORBIS nurse called Diana. 6. Further understanding
The students are going to finish the following sentence to know that apart from operations, ORBIS does another thing to help people see again.
“ORBIS uses the Flying Eye Hospital as a training center and teaches local doctors and nurses new skills.”
The teacher will ask the students to discuss: Why do ORBIS volunteers spend time teaching local doctors and nurses?
(1. Many hands make light work. 2. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.) 7. Language point 6: carry on
The students will use the information in the text to finish: More money is needed to carry on with ORBIS work. They will then be asked to think of similar expressions to replace “carry on”, which are “continue” and “go on”.
The teacher is going to present two phrases of “carry on” (carry on with sth, carry on
doing sth) and ask the students to complete three sentences. The last one is as follows. “It’s of importance to carry on researching modern medicine (研究现代医学).” “Modern medicine” takes the topic to the second reason why the people with eye problems have the hope to see. 8. Further understanding and language point 7: develop
The students will be asked to complete the sentence according to the text: Modern medicine is developing quickly. Expressions like “development” “developing country” and “developed country” will also appear in the exercises.
Purpose: The presentation of the language points is logically combined with the text. Similar situations are created as exercises. These aim to help the students better understand the text and master the usage of the language points.
Step 3: Further thinking: possible problems The students are going to discuss what problems the ORBIS volunteers may have when working in poor areas for a period of time. Some tips and expressions will be given.
Purpose: This step encourages the students think further about possible problems which the ORBIS volunteers have and voice their ideas freely. The teamwork is also improved through the group discussion.
Step 4: Further reading: benefits of working in ORBIS Based on the above discussion, it will be concluded that ORBIS volunteers face many problems but still love what they are doing in ORBIS. The second idea will be further supported by an interview with Celia, a communications manager in ORBIS.
The students are going to read her interview and discuss: “What do you think makes Celia love her work in ORBIS?”.
(Possible answers: 1. I can promote ORBIS’s work and raise awareness of the prevention of blindness around the world. 2. It’s a really unique working environment. 3. I can use my knowledge and skills to promote ORBIS’s work and help people see again. 4. I learned how to communicate with people from different backgrounds and cultures…)
Purpose: The text is also an interview, the same as the one in the book. This step helps the students understand the benefits of working in ORBIS and of helping others. It aims to develop their awareness of helping others.
Step 5: Summary
We can also get something when helping others. God helps those who help others.
