Part B Read and write
I. Analysis of Teaching Materials
This is a reading material from PEP English book 6, unit 4 Read and
write. It's about Sarah' diary, the main content of the diary is two new
kittens. It’s the sixth period of this unit. According to the New Curriculum
Standard, this reading part is to develop students ability of retelling a
passage by some key words or pictures. Students have learned some
words about colors, expression of the dates and so on. So, it is easier for
students to know the growing process of kittens.
II. Analysis of the students
As for Students in Grade five, they have a strong sense of curiosity and an
active participation in class. They also have ability of imitation and
cooperation. But their pronunciation and reading need to be improved.
III. Teaching Aims
Knowledge aims
By the end of the lesson, students are able to listen, read and recognize
diary、kitten、make noises、white fur and still in the context.
Ability aims
1. Students can read the diary out in correct pronunciation and
intonation.
2. Students can describe the growing process of the kittens.
Moral aims
Students can get enjoyment from observing things.
IV. Teaching key and Difficult points
1. Students are able to describe the growing process of kittens.
2. Help students retell the diaries.

The task-based language teaching, the communicative language teaching,
PWP.
VI. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Pre-reading
1. Watch a video
Teacher plays a video and ask: What animals can you see?
( 意 图 : To catch Students’ attention and help them understand the
difference between a cat and a kitten... )
2. Let’s guess
Teacher shows a picture and let students guess: What are Sarah’s diaries
about?
(意图:To help students grasp the new word kitten and lead in the topic
two new kittens.)
Step 2 While-reading
(1) Find the same points of four diaries.
Teacher shows a picture of the diaries, and lets students find the same
points of them. Students may find the same points like the dates, kittens.
(意图:To help students notice the format of observing diaries.)
(2) Order the pictures
(意图:To help students get a general understanding by combining the
pictures and diaries.)
1. Detailed reading
(1) Read the first diary and answer the questions.
Teacher shows the first diary, and asks students to answer the following
questions:
Q1: How old are they?
Q2:What color are they?
Q3: What can’t they do?
(意图:To help students get the main idea of the diary, and lead students
to learn the diary from age, color and what the kittens can do. )
When students answered the third question: What can’t they do? I’ll ask
them to think: What can they do?
(意图:To expand students' thinking. )
(2) Group work
Teacher shows the information table, and let students read the rest 3
diaries in groups of four. Then finish the following information table.
(意图:To let students get the main idea of the diaries from different
aspects by themselves and understand the diaries quickly by cooperation.)
(3) listen and imitate.
Teacher plays the record sentence by sentence. And students will read
them in different way, like reading together or reading in groups and so
on.
(意图:To guide students read the diary out in correct pronunciation and
intonation. Besides, it can make preparation for retelling the diaries.)
Step 3 Post-reading
1. Read and retell.
Teacher lets students read the diaries in groups of four. Then each
students will choose one diary to retell in their groups.
(意图:To encourage all of students to participate in retelling in their
groups with the help of the information table.)
Before reading, teacher shows students a learning assessment. After
reading, teacher lets students evaluate each other in following aspects.
( 意 图 : Guide students to pay more attention to their pronunciation,
intonation and self-confidence.)
2. Guess and enjoy
(1) Teacher shows the following pictures to the students, and lets them
figure out the age of the kittens when they are on June 16th. Then, let
students guess:What can they do?...
(意图:To develop students' ability to observe the kittens from different
aspects like age, features and their abilities. And it also helps students to
predict the changes of the kittens.)
(2) Show more videos about the growing process of animals and plants.
(意图:To get enjoyment from observing things.)
VII. Homework( Choose at least one of them to finish.)
1. Finish the tasks on page 43.
2. Retell Sarah's diaries to your parents or friends.
3. Finish the diary about Sarah's kittens on Jun.16th.
